Thoughts on Greer Cab?

Apparently, their 2011 release opens tomorrow. (Is it on the calendar?) Cellar Tracker very strong on them; Tanzer not so much on Potts’ version, but has not reviewed these wines themselves.
Thoughts?

Thanks in advance,
Josh

Possibly my favorite Napa cab, regardless of the price. The 2008 was a revelation, and each vintage since has been wonderful.

Tanzer has not reviewed Greer, only Pott made from the Greer vineyard. Greer is in my top 5 California wines.

Eric,

I only have the 2010 thus far, having only joined the list last year. Based upon your experiences, what is your best guess at a drinking window? I want to try one, but am hesitant to open one quite this young.

TIA,

Ron

I had a 2010 in November last year - I gave it a six hour splash decant, and it drank quite well. I had a taste right after uncorking it, and it was pretty reserved. So, I think you can go ahead, just plan it in advance and give it a bunch or air.

Thanks for the clarification!

Fantastic expression of the bench. I prefer this to Staglin and Scarecrow. I haven’t been a huge fan of the Arsenal despite same winemaker and vineyard. Apparently this is a different clone. Whatever - love this cab.

I’m really hoping I make the list this year.

The 2011 Greer was probably the best 2011 we tasted back in April (Colgin, Dana, Kapcsandy, Blankiet, VHR, Pott) . It was a tad below the 2010 Greer, but the drop off was not as much as I’d expected.

About a year ago, I tasted the entire 2011 Pott line-up when I was in Napa and thought they were all quite remarkable wines for the “dreaded” 2011. In fact, I bought more of the 2011 Pott wines than I did of the 2010. I think Aaron got it right in 2011 and this Greer is further proof of that.

FWIW, here is my note from April:

2011 Greer - Great nose, black cherry, cassis, spice, dust. Palate was impressive, great mid-palate and tannin structure. Maybe a bit shorter finish than previous years. 95 points

A seriously great, dense, long aging Rutherford Cab that is fairly priced considering the micro production.

No soup for me !!

You might care to revise the opening post, as most don’t read the guts below it. It misrepresents Tanzer and Greer. This is just a suggestion, not a catty remark by any stretch.

Best,

Kenney

Done!

Thanks,
Josh

I have actually not had the 2011. [head-bang.gif]

But Greer is a Cab you pretty much never have to worry about the vintage with. Vintage can alter the style and intensity, but not the basic quality. In my opinion, Greer is THE definition of Rutherford Bench. I would put it up against any contender for that crown.

I took a quick visit last week to the vineyard and tasted the fruit on the vine. Rob was there and he said his 12, just bottled, is his best wine yet. Don’t see any reason not to believe that to be true. He also has a new acre planted, which should start producing next year. Every year his production inches up.

Just curious to know…

What does this cost at release?

$125 at release

Cool… Thanks

The 2007 is still one of the best cabs I have ever had.

I missed out on the 2007… But the 2008 is one of the best cabs I have ever had.
