Things that make no sense in your wine life

Not so cool after all, I guess.

The “looks” that my wife gives me.

There is this French movie, a comedy, titled “Le dîner de cons”. It refers to snooty bourgeois finding “cons” and inviting them to dinner. The cons are oblivious that they are there for the hosts entertainment. What characterizes these cons is that they are fully committed to a passion that makes no sense to others such as creating landmark sculptures out of popsicle sticks and, once you get them started, they won’t shut up.

Alcohol makes more sense than Popsicles sticks to my wife yet, when I start switching stems, checking books and breaching the fascinating subjects of vineyard exposition, Kimmeridgian soil or ouillage during l’apéritif, I’ve heard her allude to that movie more than once.

To this and all the other similar posts in the thread, I offer you this line from Atlas Shrugged:

Contradictions do not exist. Whenever you think that you are facing a contradiction, check your premises. You will find that one of them is wrong.”

In this case, the incorrect premise is that you discover and obtain wines solely so you’ll eventually have them to drink. In fact, it’s a big part of the fun of the hobby.

You and I will die someday with unopened bottles in the cellar, and it will be fine that it is so (the wine, not us dying  ). Someone else will drink it or sell it, but it will have been part of our enjoyment while we lived anyway.

The irony of this post is that Huet has had a bad rap among its drinkers for fast aging issues of late. That said, I really like it when its on and also enjoy dry chenin blank of varying styles, from the bombastic richness of Joly to crisp minerality of Boudignon.

My wife has a good one that to me makes no sense to me. She absolutely adores BdB champagne. She absolutely abhors the vast majority of chardonnay.

I don’t think he’s complaining he hasn’t been able to get one, just identifying a weird gap in his experience. Most of us have those. You can’t have tried everything.

Thank goodness, too.

Ahhhh, that explains some invitations I’ve received over the years….

Also, for the love of God, just buy some Huet.:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I made the mistake of buying lots of Huet vintage 2002. I still hold a grudge.

I drink more white now than red–but probably 75% of my cellar is red. I do have a ton of Champagne and riesling but not enough other whites. I probably need to sell some reds to make room for more whites. I guess I always think I don’t need to age whites as much (outside of riesling) but that probably doesn’t make sense.

This is an easy answer for me. Nothing. Nothing in my wine life makes sense. Nothing at all.

I care about fitness and health and I’m a wine lover.

Virtually all of my wine purchases come from emotional moments when I’m not listening to the voice of reason (the one that tells me that money is better kept/spent elsewhere).

This. 90%+ of the white and rosé wines I buy are consumed within a month. 90%+ of the red wines I buy won’t be consumed for many years. Obviously, the priorities shift as I get older, but once you’ve formed a habit…

I keep saying I’m going to do more backfilling and ageable white buying, but the last minute white wine purchases give me a chance to peruse other things at my local shops. Perhaps I’m just afraid to expose other things that don’t make sense about this hobby.

My understanding is it’s really the sec wines that had an issue, have you tried any recently or did you get rid of them?

Most common thought and corresponding action on Berserkers ever.

I literally ache when trying to decide what wine to open, every single time. I don’t freeze up at any other (often MUCH more significant) decision in my life, but I have major anxiety trying to make sure I pick the correct wine to open, if it’s $25 or $100 it doesn’t matter. I check and cross-reference WB and CT constantly, look for pairings on other sites, check notes to be sure I’m not opening it during an ‘awkward phase’, and just freak out, in general, until I decide, and EVERY SINGLE TIME I don’t understand what I just freaked out about…until next time.

I love that though, thats half the fun!

While I have certain bottles that I know not to open (wines that need aging, and/or are special and hard to replace), almost everything else is fair game any night of the week. I pretty much just grab bottles randomly these days, unless there is a particular food pairing I’m trying to coordinate. No angst at all, just enjoy!

Glad to know I’m not the only one. It’s almost easier to just drink water.
