The true cult wine - a gathering of the acolytes with cult-leader Abe Schoener

You can call Screaming Eagle a cult wine if you want, but the true wine cult on this continent is the Scholium Cult, led by winemaker Abe Schoener. The New York cult had its gathering last night, complete with with secret instructions to wait at a non-descript grey door on Essex Street, the secret password (so secret we still don’t know what it was), and a two flight climb, which we were told to make single file, up to a private apartment. 50 people jammed in to taste 10 wines and listen to cult leader Schoener spend an hour discussing his wine-making techniques. Whole cluster fermentation, ripped skins, pump over versus punch down versus battonage versus climbing into barrels, to sulfur or not to sulfur, low intervention, controlling acid levels naturally, minerality, ripeness, residual sugar, stuck fermentation, the importance of drainage, St. George root stock, romatic but overrated hillside vineyard locations, North Form Sauvignon Blanc, fermentation on lees, not racking in advance, blending graoes, blending barrels of the same grapes, evaporation rates in wood bottles, large barrels versus small barrels, oxidation, barrel aging, bottle aging, malolactic fermentation, neutral barrels and limited new oak, and a lot more things I have forgotten.

Unfortunately, Abe’s penchant for obscure unpronounceable Greek names, coupled with his bad busienss sense that caused him not to have order sheets at the tasting, makes posting notes more difficult. I am seeking an accurate list of names of the wines and hope to post details later. For now . . .

Babylon - In the past, this has been an intense Petite Sirah head banger that has uber-flavor without flabby over-extraction. This year’s is a little different, with intensity but delicacy at the same time. More approachable now. Meatiness and red fruit flavor with tanins that are softer than in the past but that last on your tongue for a long time.

La Severita di Bruto Farina - This is a great Sauvignon Blanc. I spent last Sunday on the North Fork tasting Sauvignon Blanc and although those were good, this was far superior. Complex flavors with flkoral components, guava and other tropical fruits, with citrus orange in the background. No weedy greenness.

I have always loved the Project. The spirit of learning and experimentation are to be applauded. No, the wines may not be every tasters cup of tea; but they are truly unique. His hand with Sauvignon Blanc is awesome!

Jay - I got there late but I think I got everything correct (but not the order of the first few wines). Unbelievable turnout! I counted 60 people and I think I heard from someone at the Scholium Headquarters that over 200 people tried to RSVP’d and hence the reason for the second NYC date that was added.

2009 La Severità di Bruto – Farina Vineyards (Sauvignon Blanc)
2009 Prince in His Caves – Farina Vineyards (Skin fermented Sauvignon Blanc)
2009 Riquewihr – Lost Slough Vineyards (Gewurtz)
2009 Bokisch Ranches MSL Reserve (partially skin fermented Verdelho)
2008 Choephori – Los Olivos Vineyard (Chardonnay)
2006 San Floriano Del Collio Reserve – Rocky Hill Vineyards (Skin Fermented Pinot Grigio)
2008 Gardens of Babylon (50% Petite Sirah, Mourvedre, Merlot & Syrah)
2007 Bricco Babelico - Tenbrinks (Special barrel selectioins of Petite Sirah)
2008 Androkteinos – Hudson Vineyards (Syrah from the widowmaker block)
2008 Babylon – Tenbrink Vineyards (Petite Sirah)

I liked all the wines…but my favorite was the freak show 2006 San Floriano Del Collio Reserve, not because it was the best wine, but because of its uniqueness.

I thought the LSB showed extremly well.

I also really like the Bricco Babelico.

Lastly I think all of the wines would have showed even better if served at proper temperatures, not withstanding the conditions they still show extremely well.

JUST A REMINDER WE ARE HAVING AN ALL SCHOLIUM OFFLINE ON NOVEMBER 1st. YOU CAN SIGN UP IN THE OFFLINE SECTION.

Did y’all get to taste the Sonoma Cab in barrel that Abe sourced from one of the old vineyards formerly used for Kenwood Artist series?

Pure dope.

I forgot to mention that the usual suspects included Mr. Dentice, Len Fox, Rob Klafter, Josh Leader and that tall red headed kid whose name I always forget, and probably a few more who I did not recognize without name tags.

NO! It is not going to be released with this round. I also forgot to taste it at the winery this past weekend. At the winery, I did taste Assistant Winemaker Graeme’s personal cab project and it is amazing! Classic, balanced old school cab. I asked for several refills!

The order of the early wines was:

Riquewihr
MSL Reserve
LSB
Prince
You have it right starting from the Choepheroi.

I actually really liked the freak show SFDC (then again, I liked its first, similarly weird incarnation as well). I also thought the oxidized version of Choepheroi was pretty sick; I got the feeling that most people in the room other than me weren’t feeling it, though.

This year’s version of the Prince was not speaking to me. It tasted almost more like beer than wine (think English “real ale” or a flat, dry hard cider).

Oh, also – apparently there is also a bit of cinsault in the blend for the Gardens of Babylon.

Were you out here in Suisan City?

I was in Napa for the weekend and Suisan City on Saturday Night!

You should have come down Sunday night for Giants v Dodgers baseball on the big screen, we opened some winners too!
