Algeria??? Yup! Plus, how the legacy of this was the introduction of AOC system: http://www.wine-economics.org/aawe/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/Vol9-Issue01-01-Giulia-Meloni-and-Johan-Swinnen.pdf
Interesting article, except maybe they could’ve mentioned a few little things…like the Algerian Revolution against France from 1954 - 1962; the exodus of nearly a million European Algerians in 1962, the bloody reprisals (i.e.: murder) against tens of thousands of former French sympathizers; and how the conflict pretty much crashed the French government (4th republic). Not to mention the compatibility issues between the production/consumption of any type of alcoholic beverage and the moslem religion. Little things like that.

I think the gist of it was the effect this bubble had on French protectionism and AOC laws. This was from the Society of Wine Economists, not historians.
“An analysis of the causes of growth and decline of such an important economic sector should be of interest to everyone interested in economic history and development.”
Their words, not mine.

Economic history, not social, political, religious or war history.
Jesus Roberto! Here’s some economic history…A busy little vacation community was economically successful for over 100 years. It was ideally situated on the scenic Bay of Naples with mountain and ocean views. Wine consumption steadily increased until all commerce stopped abruptly in 79AD. Vacationers found alternative destinations, and wine sales were distributed to other increasingly prosperous beach communities along the Tyrhennian Sea.
Missing anything pertinent? Some historical events have more significance than others…even if not strictly economic.

I haven’t read the article, but if your hypothesis as an economist is "regulations [or X] caused a result " it’s incumbent upon you to explain why other factors [Y, Z, etc.] were not a cause of that result.
Yes to all of the above but the influx of Algerian wine resulted in protectionist regs and then AOC and that is the point of the article. It isn’t about WHY production cratered, it’s about how France reacted when it was growing exponentially.
Re Pompeii, they bounced back pretty quickly and make great wine there now. We always say that a smoking volcano on a wine label is a good sign and we’ve got a few from both Vesuvius and Etna.
