I was channeling my inner-@Rich_Brown as I was popping and enjoying that old Cali Cab!
Happy birthday!
Terrific wines (I’m with you and your sister on the Certan de May). Even better storytelling!
Maybe not overselling it if you think of it as THE beauty, as in the defining example of.
No; as I explained in my original post, this was not the meaning. Just the noun, not the defining example of it.
Apropos for me, someone that could allegedly be prone to some hyperbole and Cuban-style exaggeration! I have to say, I chuckled over your fastidiousness and your pedantic post, couple of weeks ago you were teasing me for having such a pithy tasting note post, and here I write a tome - while admittedly very very buzzed - then you fixate on some Greek word that is ancillary to the story! I consulted my Homeric books and learned Paris exclaimed to Helen of Troy, “To Kalon!”. Although the myth has it, it is unclear whether he was referring to her or himself.
But you were not the one who named it. Do we know what was in Crabb’s mind when he chose that name?
In any case, what made me think of this is the upcoming game between Michigan and THE Ohio State University.
He and my mom are still quite spry at 86 and still love fine wine, which they drink every evening.
An important note; thanks for sharing!
Well, Robert,
It was a grammatical observation, not one concerning you personally. But if you need/want to take it that way, consider it a birthday present.
Josh
Robert made out in the breakup at Krug. Peter got the winery. Robert got To-Kalon.
Happy birthday!
Hope you didn’t break anything!
Thank you, that’s very kind of you. I’m definitely holding up even at 60.
He was obviously talking about your dad, who is looking like a million dollars in that picture!
Ok even my dad has limitations! I could tell he was dragging last night for round two! And so was my son. Weaklings! Clearly that are not as well-trained as my liver and I are!
Happy Birthday. Great story.
Had a 2019 Dauvissat Le Forest recently, and it was sublime. The minerality was stunning, fresh lemon peel, a but nutty, a hint of brine, white flowers. It was a wonderful and very complete wine. Such a great winemaker.

I really wish I could have followed that 2022 through the evening. That’s one of the downsides of having fine wines at a large gathering, you really only get one glass and then you move on. My ideal is to follow a wine like this, or frankly, any of the ones that I popped, over the course of an entire evening.
I have a six pack of the 2023 coming in shortly, really excited about that. I’ll pop one in the interest of science, and fun, and then put the rest away in storage.
Robert, just beautiful, just truly beautiful.
That was a great rambling family history, so beautifully intertwined with so much great wine.
I ‘studied’ (ahem, kinda slept through) a year of ancient Greek and then spoke enough modern Greek to get by pretty easily when I visited Greece, where I’ve been almost a dozen times. I hope to go back this spring.
My translation of ‘Kalon’ is high-ness, not as in royal highness, but referring to a pinnacle, something ultimate.
I wonder, too, if the original name Hermosa lends to the conclusion that To-Kalon was intended to have the same meaning, gussied up in classical Greek. Fascinating and learned read on the language and etymology. Thank you for starting the post, and all who have lent a hand. I’ve enjoyed reading it.
@Robert.A.Jr, also - thank you for sharing the evening and story. I’ve been casting about for a ‘65 for my husband’s birth year … no ‘65 Charles Krug on my horizon, but ‘65 was clearly a fine vintage for men. :0D Happy birthday!
