Wine goes through fashions, just like women’s clothing, but two of the most unfortunate phases in American enology occurred in sync with Pacers, bell bottoms and big pointy collars … heavy malo, and high oak. At the time, many of these wines were hailed by critics and some continue to receive high scores because … well I don’t know why.
So, for the benefit of all and especially noobeez, please list the wines that are over-scored, over-hyped, and way over-oaked …
PMC is going to have a field day with this thread.
I think over oaked is a subjective term. Tasting a wine young will obviously show more oak as it takes time to integrate. Older SO’s are not over oaked but the new ones are terribly and who knows if it will integrate. Here are two as I had these recently and they were really bad, maybe they will get better with time, maybe not.
Why does it always have to be about you? Seriously though SOOOO many people think all the Foley products are the shiznit so they turn up a lot. They are lost on me especially any of the CAb/Bord varietal products.
I’m not afraid of oak - but I found it over the top for me with the 05 Clio’s. I’m sure it will settle down and be fantastic, but my one check-in with these was not pleasurable.
In the same vein – I thought the 2004 Karl Lawrence Napa Cab was a splinter class action lawsuit waiting to happen upon release. About a year later, it was integrated (or more so than when I first tried it) and fantastic.
