The Over-Oaked List: Bombs Away!

Wine goes through fashions, just like women’s clothing, but two of the most unfortunate phases in American enology occurred in sync with Pacers, bell bottoms and big pointy collars … heavy malo, and high oak. At the time, many of these wines were hailed by critics and some continue to receive high scores because … well I don’t know why.

So, for the benefit of all and especially noobeez, please list the wines that are over-scored, over-hyped, and way over-oaked …

Like … Silver Oak.

As much as I like fruit and oak…

uhho…

PMC is going to have a field day with this thread.

I think over oaked is a subjective term. Tasting a wine young will obviously show more oak as it takes time to integrate. Older SO’s are not over oaked but the new ones are terribly and who knows if it will integrate. Here are two as I had these recently and they were really bad, maybe they will get better with time, maybe not.

Sheez. In the immortal words of Bruno D’Alfonso, ‘you can’t over oak a wine, but you can under wine the oak.’ [berserker.gif]

Far Niente

Where to start? Sheesh! Any Bob Foley product. That’s a big enough list for now. Oh, and Monbousquet.

You just LOVE to throw those out there cuz you know I’m a fan of both.

I think he stole that one from Mel Knox.

“there are no over-oaked wines, just under-wined barrels”

Why does it always have to be about you? [beee.gif] Seriously though SOOOO many people think all the Foley products are the shiznit so they turn up a lot. They are lost on me especially any of the CAb/Bord varietal products.

Two more:
Lewis
Blankiet

El Nido Clio. I would imagine El Nido El Nido as well, but I’ve never had one.

Because I’m an only child.

Agreed on your next choices though.

…as we wait for Loring to comment.

I like both Clio and Nido. Oaked, most definitely. But over the top…I don’t find it so. But again, I like B. Foley wines.

I’m not afraid of oak - but I found it over the top for me with the 05 Clio’s. I’m sure it will settle down and be fantastic, but my one check-in with these was not pleasurable.

In the same vein – I thought the 2004 Karl Lawrence Napa Cab was a splinter class action lawsuit waiting to happen upon release. About a year later, it was integrated (or more so than when I first tried it) and fantastic.

Pahlmeyer and Blankiet, among others. For the right bank Bordeaux: La Couspaude and Monbousquet.

ditto me on this one … big time. if the oak integrates, will be a fantastic wine … if it does not, well … it’s an awfully tasty $40 2x4

the most recent offender to splinter my tongue:
2006 Kutch Pinot Noir Russian River Valley

Oh yeah…and it was more like American Oak to me. I love when people describe these as a more elegant feminine Cali Pinot. [emot-words.gif]

Hey…you guys need to stop bashing the Squires Board darling boy and his pinots.

It was total garbage. … and so hot it burned — had to gank Landreth’s favorite steak pron accessory to put out the fire. [wow.gif]
