Yeah–I wish Peru’s producers well, but the Peruvian wines I had last summer when I was down there didn’t excite me. On the other hand, I was not in any sense doing a scientific survey.
That article is about the POTENTIAL of the country. It has lots of probably cheap land at good elevation and incline plus a good climate for wine in some of those areas. People with money looking to expand their production / do joint ventures are looking at it…
Hmmm. Well, maybe not for a decade or so. I was travelling in Peru about two years ago and at all restaurants, they were serving Chilean or Argentinean wines. I asked about local wines and was told not to bother. Even at a few restaurants that had a sommelier - or the equivalent - they were not too up on local wines.
Whatever the potential, I’ll still take the under on Peru becoming “the next big wine country.”
