That was the standard measure for a U.S. ‘magnum’ until conversion to metric in 1970 or thereabouts. The standard bottle size was 1/5 gallon, often labeled 4/5 quart.

Does one have to have shopped at this store before to have access to this sale? I’m also wondering why they haven’t gone through auction for those?

N.V. Heitz Cellar “Cellar Treasure Angelica” - USA, California, Napa Valley (12/2/2004)
Roy Hersh’s 1990 & older tasting of “Wines that don’t suck” (Sammamish, WA, USA): A dessert blend of “Mission Grapes”, this shows raisin and walnut (that was Rod’s descriptor as I recall and I liked it) on the nose. The palate is almost like maple syrup and very reminiscent of that flavor profile with lots of caramel. The finish is searing and hot, less enjoyable.
And that 1969 C-91 is simply killer. I had one for my 40th birthday (birthyear wine). Alas that pricetag is about triple what I paid for my last bottle.

Opened for my 40th. John Gilman wrote a fantastic review of this wine that sums it up. It’s a baby Heitz Martha’s with huge notes of mint and eucalyptus bursting from the decanter the moment is is opened. Smoke and underbrush join the party as well. Wow, what a palate, totally silken and resolved, fresh and juicy, just gorgeous yesteryear Cabernet from Napa, classic, bright red fruit, supple, gorgeous balance. Not tired in the least. Really stunning. (93 pts.)

Part III is up
I got a couple of bottles of 1974 Burgess - one of my favorites.
I picked up a few birth year wines: '78 Burgess, '78 Cakebread Lot 2, and '78 Beringer KV. I’ve never had pre-1990 wines from Napa before, so it should at least be educational.
Some of the 1978s are phenomenal. This weekend I had a 1978 Conn Creek that was sensational, and next weekend a real treat of a 1978 Shafer Napa (Stag’s Leap)with grapes taken from the vineyard that has become the source for Hillside Select. I stand them up for a couple of days, and then decant gently off the sediment when it is time for dinner.
