The Grenache thread

That’s the one, Michael.

Dipped my toe in Sardinian wines. Love this one, a different take on Grenache.
2018 Cardedu Cannonau di Sardegna Caladu

Technically a Grenache blend, but this 2010 Domaine des Bosquets Gigondas is in its prime time. $25 off Winebid.

Senlanne Arsis 2023

Charismatic winemaker: check
Low intervention: check
Old vines: check
Small production: check
Good wine? check check check check!

Grenache Noir from Langeudoc but that wouldn’t be the first (or second) guess. More “burgundian” than the Fourrrier.
Medium body, good acidity, smooth flow. A fine perfumed nose, all kinds of berries, rose petals, dry leaves, a touch of spice, and a cool mineral undertow.

The Jaffurs 2023 Grenache is a really good one. My understanding is this is the second vintage of all concrete tank fermentation and aging.

Interesting - will have to reach out to Stephen to get a bottle to try.

I just ordered a case.

The Senlanne Arsis looks right up my alley. Having a hard time locating where to purchase it - does it not have US distribution?

I don’t know, sorry, but given small production it’s not so likely. I got mine in France.

The Arsis is great, have you tried his Altus? Beautiful white wine, saline and fresh.

I had a really interesting Aussie grenache (the 2019 She’s Electric cuvee) from Thistledown Wines. Schneiders in DC has a bunch and I took a flier. Nicely complex, and was certainly well made and lower alcohol than expected.

I love Châteauneuf. I realize it is not 100% Grenache, but it is the primary grape, so I’m going to count it. It has always been my favorite. Nothing is more satisfying to me than having a great CDP with a bowl of lamb stew in the late fall or winter months. My little slice of heaven. I love the different styles - the traditional to the more modern. I love the fruit flavors and the garrigue notes. Different vintages can be more red fruit dominated while some can possess dark fruits. It can also have a gamey character and herbal quality that is very satisfying with certain dishes. Grenache from other countries/regions just doesn’t have as much appeal to me. CDP just feels like home.

Nice!! There is some really good and interesting grenache coming out of Australia, including the best example that I’ve ever tried from any region:

2011 Cirillo 1850 Ancestor Vine Grenache, Barossa Valley. I’ve been wanting to try this wine for a while now as it supposedly comes from the oldest known Grenache vines in the world which were planted in 1850, and I was finally able to source one here in the states with a little age on it. Screw-cap closure so the wine was in perfect condition, and it poured a rusty and fairly translucency red color with an excellent nose of red berries, cinnamon, and a hint of glycerin that, fortunately, disappeared quickly after a little air. In the mouth, this was a complete surprise. Yes the cranberry, earthy red berries and baking spice were on full display…but what stands out more than anything is the acidity. This wine is literally GUSHING with acidity. It is meshing perfectly with the super old vine fruit and creating an absolutely spectacular, medium minus bodied mouth-feel. What a treat! Loved this wine and will absolutely be looking for more!

Good to know, I have one bottle, I will give it a go soon.
The new vintage is out, it looks like I have to buy some wine.

If you didn’t try the cannonaus from Dettori then I recommend giving them a try! Perhaps a slightly cooler vintage (keep an eye on the alcohol level if you are a bit sensitive to higher levels as in some vintages +16% - doesn’t mean they won’t be good).

There’s always wine to buy

Dani Landi’s wines are excellent and good value, Commado G nice but pricing has gone insane. Alkina from Australia is great. I’m not sure anything beats the Reynaud wines (Rayas, Des Tours) if they have enough air.
