The Good Old Stuff, 3rd Edition, Saturday 10/17, Brunswick, Maine

If you love wine, whether your collection is <60 bottles or >6000, something is getting old… This is when we do something about it!
Every year we gather at Taverna Khione, a great small Greek restaurant, to open older bottles. Some will be dead, some will be old but still enjoyable, some will be revelations (1969 Chateau d’Yquem last year).

The tasting is for ~20 people. Five to ten of those will be me and my peeps, the rest board members. Please post if you want to attend. This is a totally informal event. Cost will be $100 plus gratuity. The menu is classic Greek. Dietary restrictions are honored. The main courses will be fresh swordfish from Maine waters and fresh lamb from Maine land.

Schedule:
Arrive any time between 4 - 6PM.
4PM - come on in, pull corks, shoot the breeze
5PM - Mezethes, a few wines, then lobster, a few more wines
6PM - Sit down, dig in, drink up
9PM - Wind down and disperse
Place - Taverna Khione, 25 Mill St, Brunswick, ME

Last year corks were pulled at random and I think with just a little more planning we could have some more enjoyable comparisons. Please bring no more than 2 bottles per person and post what you’re bringing. I’ll suggest pairings. They can be ignored, but at least we can think about what wines might be interesting served together.
The restaurant has good, not great, stemware. Feel free to bring your own. We will have enough decanters. Bring your Durand! As we get closer we can discuss hotels as well as before and/or after get-togethers, restaurants in Portland and Brunswick, and everything else.

Would love to but extremely tentative at this time. I suspect I can make it, but can’t commit right now for a reason irrelevant to wine.

A wonderfully chosen date, landing between my Rioja trip and the AWS conference. Count me in!

My cellar is still a disorganized mess from moving but hopefully that will improve by October.

We’re probably a ‘no’ for this year. If things change, I’ll check in.

Word to non-Mainers: mid-October lodging bookings will fill up quickly with it being peak foliage season. Book early.

I’m not sure I’ve ever planned anything 6 months in advance. Tag us as interested and hopeful.

I’m in, can’t wait! Thanks so much for the advanced notice. This gives me plenty of time to find a sitter!

We are unfortunately not going to be able to make it this year.

There are three good upscale, independent, reasonably priced hotels in Brunswick. Last year, I wound up scheduling the tasting for the week of Bowdoin Homecoming and they were all full early. That should not be a problem this year.
Hotels up the coast (Camden and farther) and in the mountains and the north would be tough. Brunswick, hopefully, not so much.
It’s not like Vermont where every hotel in the state is booked decades, if not centuries in advance by the Leaf-Peeping Hordes.
