The blessing of Kabinett Trocken

Every time i drink a Kabinett-, Spätlese- or Auslese Trocken from the 90’s or 00’s (e.g. Karthàüserhof, Grünhaus, Schōnleber, Dōnnhooff) I find that they are much more attractive than similar GG’s from post 2004 will ever be
This one is classic. Weiser Kŭnstler is an unique producer of Trocken Mosel wines. Pure Riesling aromatics

W-K make beautiful trockens!! I agree with you. It seems like in the old days they maybe didn’t force the issue so much. Or better said, make trocken when conditions dictate! Dr. Uli Stein has a sure hand when it comes to Kabinett Trocken. AJ Adam as well.

Wait… I thought David said they are crap?

Great note and thought Claus. My punishment for starting to collect German wine in the mid 2010s is that I’ve seen precious few older trocken, but I keep hunting.

I absolutely love Kabinett Trocken. I call it a lost art forum. I made three of them in 2021 with Wolfram Stemple.

Also don’t forget about Falkenstein.

And in 2023 Julian Haart made a Kabinett Trocken.

You can read about the three Kabinett Trockens here:

I had a bunch of various vintages of Stein’s Alfer Hölle this summer and each of them were wonderful. Of course a €20 bottle in Germany is $75 in Canada and tough to justify as good as it is.

Well I do actively dislike them, and therefore think they are crap, but tastes differ, and other people are welcome to drink crap.

I can’t say I’m a fan of Kabinett trocken either. I like many Nahe and Rheinhessen GGs and other dry Rieslings, but could happily live without drinking another Mosel GG, to say nothing of Mosel kabinett trocken.

How can you say an insanely steep 124 year old vineyard, farmed by hand with miniscule yields that is a top example from its region is not worth 75?

Perhaps there are other $75 wines that taste better?

If I don’t like something, it’s not really worth it at any price, is it?

Or course not but I was responding to someone who said the wines were wonderful not someone who said they are not a fan.

My mistake!

(edited: many people think that Dolcetto is crap as well, let’s keep it that way please )

Note that the 2019 Trabener Gaispfad Kabinett trocken has 12.5 percent alcohol. It’s a good wine, but a rather ripe rendition of a dry Kabinett. This is, in all but name, an Auslese trocken. I prefer the 2022 vintage of this wine, which has a pale, greenish color and clocks in at just 10.5 percent alcohol.

And of course the legendary Bernd Philippis and Dominik Sonas Saumagen Trockens and Trocken R are in a league of their own

The examples from e.g. Karthàüserhof and Grünhaus are certainly not crap. Even their QBA Trockens are often stealing the show when served with GGs

The 2021 Kabinett Halbtrocken is also great

I love that wine.

Spatlese trocken instead, please…at least a tiny bit of give or extract or sugar, or a lot of age. We have a local importer for Falkenstein and have been enjoying those (cheaply until recently) for many years, but I actively dislike the Kabinett trockens I’ve had.
