The Big Scherrer Tasting Note and all things Fred Thread

Fred’s '23 Old & Mature and Shale Terrace zins are also wonderful. I found an interesting caraway note in the Shale Terrace when tasting at the Scherrer open house last weekend.

Put on Petty’s Wildflowers & All The Rest (deluxe edition) on this “Wyoming spring” Friday afternoon, here at elevation, opened and decanted (off the little bit of sediment) and poured this really nice 24+ year-old 2000 Scherrer Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander Valley. Really delicious.

Stopped by the winery Monday to pick up some wine, saw Judi and we chatted for a few. On the way out Fed was just coming in and we had a few minutes out in the parking lot. I just have to reiterate how fucking cool these two are and how proud I am to call them friends.

BTW, anyone local, Fred and Judi are having a winemakers dinner in the Barlow at Region Wine Bar on Thursday May 8th. Great food and wine pairings but best of all Fred on guitar with Jacob Michael Benning. Worth the price of admission on its own!

Opened my first bottle of 2023 Dry Rosè last night and it was beautiful. Might be my favorite vintage to date. My wife and I liked it so much I had to order some more today, along with some of the recently released 2024.

A friend brought the 2010 Alexander Valley cab out to dinner with my Friday night group Last week. It was fully mature and drinking beautifully.

That’s a good strategy with rose made in this style: Layering different vintages. The earlier vintage gets into a really nice groove at 1-2 years in bottle, while the newest one is full of perfume and verve.

David, I think you hit a great spot for that wine. 2010, like 2004 saw a heat spell at harvest that pushed the tannins into a smoother mode than usual. So at 15 years from the vintage the structure has melted for the most part while keeping the thread of youth alive to see some bottle bouquet develop. I wouldn’t expect those two vintages to make it to 35, like the others.

I opened a 97 recently and was quite struck by how youthful it shows. It’s like the past decade or so did not pass. I did not really anticipate this when the wine was still in barrel as it was rather forward.

Thanks for the information Fred and it really was drinking nicely. One of these days will have to make it back for another visit.

Fun time last night at The Barlow in Sebastopol. Fred and Judi hosted Winemaker’s Dinner at Region wine bar. Just your typical Thursday evening in Wine Country.

Jealous, for sure! Thanks for posting a pic with Judi in it. I’ve exchanged emails with her for years and had no idea what she looked it.

she looks a bit like Alan Rath’s wife IIRC

We agree, we’re half way through a case of the ‘23 Dry Rosé and a case of the ‘23 Dry Rosé of Grenache already. Fred doesn’t screw things up.

My note re: 2021 Dry Rose of Syrah:
Some folks would have you believe that Rose outside of southern France doesn’t age well but let me tell you that this bottle is in full stride at four years old and has plenty left in the tank.

This pours out in the glass a nice pink hue with a hint of orange.

The nose is very much that of fresh picked raspberries. The palate is greeted with a full on rush of cranberry, underripe strawberry and a touch of watermelon rind. The vibrant acidity keeps these flavors sitting on the back of the tongue for a very long time.

Nice Roger

Not really seeing it lol. Either way the scherrers are super people.

2021 OMV Zin is so fantastic right now. I restrained myself and just now opened my first bottle from futures - wow. It’s just got everything.

I dug deep for a zin tonight and came up with this 2004 Scherrer Shale Terrace.

I’ve characterized Fred’s Shale Terrace zin before as being a Pinot lovers zin and here is further proof. This is amazing for a 21 year old zin, light and fresh, full of ripe red and blue fruit, a hint of menthol on the nose and mouth watering acidity. There is some bricking on the rim but the structure and the flavors are holding up very well.

From another thread but belongs in the Fred Thread.

Again great color, Scherrer Alexander Valley spice on the nose but OMFG, the fruit!, ripe sweet red currant, cassis, boysenberry, followed by a wall of chalk and I mean a wall. How fun, I have two more of these in the cellar and I’m sitting on them for a while. Ed and Fred should be proud of this wine. Again a 1/2 bottle left to follow.
