The Big Scherrer Tasting Note and all things Fred Thread

My friend @Roger_Ouellette is in town for his annual internship with Fred. He joined our wine tasting group on Monday night and tonight we met at Underwood along with Glen and Pamela Gunsalus, Fred and Judi.

I brought a 2002 Scherrer Cab that after a half hour or more of air was singing but it was overshadowed by the 1988 Dehlinger Petite Sirah from Scherrer Vineyard. The only Petite Fred ever made for Tom. The vines were ripped out in favor of Cab Sauv. This wine was phenomenal! We’ve finally found the drinking window for Petite Sirah. It’s wide open at 38yrs of age. Sorry for the blurry shot, I retook the pic but it wasn’t anywhere to be found when I got home.

Thanks for the note on the Dehlinger. Sitting on two and figured I had to gift one to Fred. Maybe Tom/Eva will get it, maybe not. Think I own the Scherrer too.

Fred said they have been hit and miss, last night was obviously a hit. He said he has 3 left.

B, thank you again for the invite to join your tasting group on Monday and for coming out to Underwood last night.

I have to agree that the petite sirah was in a great place, still full of fruit but also somewhat rounded out with age. The '02 Scherrer cab you brought was definitely a close second.

I’m sitting here now after a fairly easy day at the winery (really low yields here this year so not a lot to process) sipping on a lovely glass of '24 Scherrer dry rose.

Cheers to you and D.

Sounds really fun! I need to make it to the next one as I’m living in Marin County now and it’s a short drive for my wife and I.

Hope you had safe travels home. You missed the smoke this year. There was a controlled burn in Salmon Creek yesterday that choked West County. The air quality index at the winery was hazardous at 554!

Great seeing you again as always! Have a great time on your trip and give Lisa a hug for us.
