so … which one is it? I’ll finally be popping my NYC cherry in a couple weeks, and I feel it wouldn’t be complete without the best Pastrami on rye NYC has to throw at me. So … have it – who’s got the best of the best?
Methinks it wise that you have a palate calibration at Langer’s at MacArthur Park before you go, a venture at which I’d love to join you before I skip town. Let me know.
You’re not going to do better than Katz’s.
Just go.
For pastrami specifically go to Katz’s.
I still love the flanken in the pot at Carnegie.
Already done, good sir! Langer’s currently holds first place for Best Pastrami on Rye that I’ve ever had … with Cecil’s (in St. Paul, MN) nipping on its heals – Cecil’s has better Rye, Langer’s better Pastrami. But, of course I would love to grab one with you – when are you heading outta town?
We had pastrami at Katz’s over the summer and it was not as good as it has been in the past. Corned beef was NOT good (dry and oddly seasoned). Knishes were okay (the sweet potato one was really good). Best thing we had there was the hot dog, believe it or not, and the new pickles.
If you do go to Katz’s, you owe yourself a trip down the block to Russ and Daughters. They don’t have eat in, but you can always eat on the bench out front. Best lox I have every had in my life. Seriously. And they have 7 different kinds. Great for smoked fish of all kinds. Their breads aren’t as good as other places, so you could pick up some H&H bagels, then buy the shmier and lox at R&Ds, then take it to the park for a picnic.
Around the corner is the Tenement Museum–book in advance, it’s a really cool tour.
I will probably be shipping out the last week of this month. Hopefully we can squeeze it in.
we will make it happen!
I don’t think you can pick one deli for all things Jewish, but for Pastrami, I would go to Carnegie Deli. Their corned beef is definitely the best too.
