I meant to have some master threads to keep general thoughts about producers. I had what might be my first AleSmith, at least from bottle. The somewhat famous Speedway Stout.

I’ll gladly try this again but I can’t say this really worked for me.The smell was heavily weighted towards chocolate. Leaning toward bitter chocolate. But for me it was distractingly so. The aromas were powerful but it would depend on how the flavors worked with it. Really no head on this. My first sip confirms that this is totally flat. With its heavy mouthfeel and dominating chocolate flavors, I needed some carbonation. With no carbonation, this got old fast for me.

Too bad you didn’t like the SS, Jason. I love that beer. One night about 5 or 6 years ago when Ashley and I lived one mile away in Redondo Beach, I finished my evening at Naja’s by having two pints of that stuff … considering I took two steps sideways for every step forward, I think my walk home was about 2 miles … but I didn’t care!! [drinkers.gif]

Alesmith’s Nut Brown Ale (forget the proprietary name right now) is the best nut brown ale I’ve ever had – to me, it’s the Rolls Royce of nut browns, whereas Fat Tire is the Ford Tempo. Anyone who hasn’t tried really should treat themselves.

Thanks for the thoughts. I’ll keep an eye out for this on tap. Do you recall it being flat? Just seemed like a big step down from say the Sierra Nevada 30th or the Founders Canadian Breakfast.

It was actually on nitro when I had it, so it had a bit of a Guinness-type thing going on … but, yeah, after it settled out there was very little head. Very full bodied, though. I much prefer it over the SN 30th, but they taste so differently that I don’t think the comparison is really fair to either one. Haven’t tried the Founders.

it’s superb. i think it’s called “Nautical” Nut Brown Ale.

I love the Speedway Stout! Jason, I would agree that it is pretty close to flat…but most really high quality stouts I’ve tried are borderline flat. MIkkeller’s stouts, Founders KBS, Founders Breakfast stout…barely a fizz to them.
