The Agave Thread: Tequila & Mezcal

Personally, I like Tapatio Excelencia XA, but based on what you’ve mentioned, you might enjoy Adictivo XA, which is more Clase Azul-like in profile.

Tapatio XA is very oak forward. Rey Sol would be up your alley as well. Have you tried the Jose Cuervo Reserva de la familia?

I find RDLF to be in between a Terralta XA and a Tears. Much more balanced between oak and agave and less caramel forward than Tears, Tapatio, or Rey Sol.

Tasting lineup tonight. The Clase Azul is the repo.

Quite an eclectic lineup of taste profiles/styles. That G4 is one of my favorites. Curious how Lalo did in thst lineup.

We did two flights, Blanco and aged.

The Lalo had a nice smoky nose, but a rather nondescript flavor profile. The smokiness did pop a bit on the finish but otherwise just a smooth sipper, not in the class of the other two.

The G4 had the most spice and pepper and gave some warmth going down.

The Fortaleza was bright clean agave, full mouthfeel. I can see why it gets a lot of praise. I’d like to do this blind up against Clase Azul

That G4 Madera is one of the most interesting Blancos out there with the 100% oak fermentation.

I have really enjoyed other Cazcanes products but always found them a bit pricey

smokey, sweet citrus with a bit of a burn and vegetal cooked agave. there is a viscosity to this agave juice

With deteriorating exchange rate Fortaleza might become a thing of the past for me.

Anyone try Lost Lore yet?

Aren’t there micro producers down there that we can’t even imagine?

Mezcal plenty. Tequila not so much.

Lost Lore is solid. Most Agave from 1414 is pretty safe bet.

I’m in Oaxaca right now and there are lots of micro-producers in this area. They can be amazing to visit. I’ve got a mezcal day at some micro-palenques scheduled in a couple weeks.

As for Tequila, I’m generally far more interested in mezcal, but I have tasted some Cazcanes and G4 which I quite enjoyed. The last bottle of Tequila I purchased was a G4.
