The Agave Thread: Tequila & Mezcal

Luckily I’ve stocked up with about a case of forteleza

Clase azul is my favorite, though, although I do enjoy tears de Llorna.

Tears is easily my favorite XA.

My friends have been really into agave drinks and always generously shared with me some great tequila. I finally got the bug from them after years of prodding and tastings from them. Luckily they turned me onto Fortaleza before it become hard to get so have a little bit in reserve. I also enjoy the Tequila Ocho line (this blanco is nice), G4 (love their repo and extra añejo), and tapatio excelencia extra añejo (hearing rumors that this may be hard to get in the near future).

Not sure how I mentioned Terralta above with a reference to G4, but not G4. Big miss, great stuff. Additionally have enjoyed ArteNOM Blanco, yet haven’t had aged expressions yet as they are hard to find in my market.

Somehow also missed El Tesoro, but procong has gotten a bit higher than I prefer.

Amazing XA. Apparently the current batch is the last one they’ll have for 2 years or so.

Tears is going thru same issue and may go from 1L to 750ml too.

Oh wow, good thing I grabbed a bottle of Tears last week still at 1L and a backup bottle of the tapatio ea too. G4 seems like it’s going the way of Fortaleza around my parts too and no longer readily available and doesn’t seem to stay on the shelves long once it is.

What is a good price for the Fortaleza Anejo?

$89.99

I searched around my area and snagged two bottles of Forteleza Blanco, but that’s all that was available.

I mentioned it up thread but NOM 1579 makes G4, ArteNOM 1579, Terralta, and Volans. If G4 is ever in short supply look for one of these. If you are looking for higher proof like G4 108, you can get Terralta 110 Blanco for $35-40 both made by Felipe Camarena.

Tried this funky, fascinating Raicilla last week at La Puerta in San Diego. La Venenosa has several bottlings and I will be looking to try others.

You probably get exposed to Mezcals in SD more than most of the country. Please keep sharing.

Kris, if I were a local, you would be so right. Riches abound there. I was only flying through there on my recent California stay. I live in Jacksonville. Not bereft of agave options, but no San Diego!

La Gritona is the Graeter’s Chocolate Chocolate Chip of tequila.

Yup, crazy to me that Terralta XA sits on the shelf for 30-40% less than G4 when it’s made by the same people. (only difference is well water vs rain/well mix + oxygenation)

And its a high proof XA to boot.

Never been much of a tequila guy, now I realize it was due to cheap industrial crap. Siete Leguas blanco and Reposado are my house choices. Have a bottle of Tears that I am nursing. Have an eye out for a few of the others.

Side note in Mescal- a friend brought a bottle Pechuga de Papalote- made with chicken, chocolate and other. That was unique- Edit to add - producer was Cinco Sentidos (5 Sentidos, but on this bottle actually spelled out  )

Has anyone tried the Siete Leguas 7 Decadas Blanco? Price seemed a bit steep for a blanco and only 700mL. I’ve enjoyed the limited experience with Siete Leguas but seemed a bit high.

Also, thanks for heads up on theTerralta XA - I’ll give it a shot on next round of tequila purchases.

So its higher proof (42 vs 40), and uses ‘criollo’ agave, which is supposedly more flavor rich, etc. But…they’re hyping it up as a ‘limited edition’ (not really, 70k cases production) and charging 3x their normal blanco price. Is it really good? Yes! Is it worth 3x? That’s up to you. For me, there’s a ton of higher high proof I’d rather get for 1/2 the price (Fortaleza Still Strength, Terralta 110, G4 108, Siembra Valles High proof, list goes on)
