Thanksgiving - 2025

Hosting at our house for the first time, headcount is 8. Wide variance of wine preferences so figured I’d offer a bit of everything. All on the cheap and easy end, would rather focus on the food and the company.

Bubbles: 2021 Raventós i Blanc De La Finca
White: 2023 Hugel Gentil “Hugel”
Rose: 2024 Château de Trinquevedel Tavel
Red: 2023 Terres Dorées Beaujolais l’Ancien VV

Thats the beauty of thanksgiving, you can put out a mix of bottles, and let everyone find their happy place

I work night 5 12s next whole week including Thanksgiving day so I’ll make vietnamese beef stew, garlic parmesan bread, hawaiian purple yam, prep some broccolini, romanesco and carrots for easy cooking before/after work. I pretty much got no energy left after work so I just pop them in the air fryer for 15 mins and call it a day. Maybe I’ll pair with Peay’s Les Titans Syrah, one bottle for the whole week.

Living alone in the States kinda sucks when it’s the holidays and I got nothing to do beside picking up shifts, but damn the differentials + holiday pay funds my BD17 purchases.

I have a bunch of 2019 Antichi Castelli Toscani Brunello di Montalcino that I got for $14 from Zachys. Tried one out the other day and thought it a light-hearted BdM.

I’ll throw in some Sabelli-Frisch Riesling and Mission, Briceland Pinot, and Venge Silencieux (picked up for $21) for those wanting something bigger.

My grandma used to advise “please yourself, please everyone””. So, although we are hosting, and will have wine for those who want it, we have answered the question “what can I bring” with a “we have plenty of wine, but if you would rather drink something else, feel free to bring your own drinks”. For the meal, the wines will start with two from Ronchi di Cialla with Jacqueline’s attempt at Bouef a la mode. A 2022 Schioppettino RiNera in the pot and a 2018 Schioppettino di Cialla on the table. :wine_glass:

Yes, past pie. :grinning:

Don’t decant. You have all day to follow the wines no need to open early. I’ll let them warm up gradually to see if they change. No need to keep real cold.

Thanksgiving always feels like a time to open bottles that may not be the most expensive but are special to me. Wines from the likes of Goodfellow, Sun Break, Berthaut-Gerbet that I want to open and share with friends and family, even if they aren’t familiar with the subtleties of Grand Cru Burgundy.

Traveling to see my parents in VA. It’ll just be us, and the only real drinkers are my father and I. He drinks that Oak Leaf box wine, but also really loves better wine, so he defers to me and smiles ear-to-ear when I bring out a case. Of note, he really has a true appreciation for old vine zinfandel, so I’m coming through with Bedrock OVZ along with a few random OVZ’s available at this trading post down the street from where I’m staying rn (We’re in the santa cruz mountains for a trip) and I just pulled the cork on a fantastic 2019 OVZ from Wilson. Never heard of em. Gonna snag a few more for the festivities.

@Marcus_Goodfellow 2018 Lewman Heritage has plenty of complexity right now and can deliver an expressive experience scoring more points than many Grand Cru. But if you can open a Berthaut Gerbet Echezeaux, that would be awesome too!

I bet! We’ve had quite a few Goodfellows outperform Grand Crus. But I feel a little better opening one of my multiple $40-70 Goodfellow or B-G Fixin SVD for a group of non-wine folks than I do opening my single bottle of M-G Ruchottes

Work conflicts all around on actual thanksgiving day, which is not uncommon in our family with the number of healthcare workers.
We will gather a couple of days after for the traditional turkey.

That leaves the holiday for dim sum. The first time we did this on a major holiday it blew my mind how packed it was. I had always thought it would be a sad scene like Christmas Day dinner from the movie A Christmas Story. In reality it’s packed and full of good energy with all kinds of people and families enjoying themselves.
Plan on taking a 98 Vilmart cuvee Creation, an 08 Philipponnat, and maybe an old Ultramarine depending on how many join.

100% on this concept. Back in the 90s Maurice Ecard’s Savigny-les-Beaune “Les Serpentieres” was a perfect Thanksgiving red for the whole group. $25 retail, easily enjoyed by the Burgundy nerds, and just delicious for everyone.

Cru Beaujolais as well, and back then the Trimbach Reserve Pinot Gris was a perfect turkey wine, or something from Domaine Weinbach.

Alone for the first time in years. I’ve been invited to my neighbors for dinner and I’ve been asked to bring a vegetable side. Of course I have plenty of wine so I’m going to look for a Pinot, their favorite.

Am I the only one who can’t day drink? I get a terrible hangover and fall asleep by 6 o’clock at night.

I’m not sure yet what I’ll open, but I’ll have it with leftovers in the evening
