2004 Rhys Pinot Noir Family Farm Vineyard - USA, California, San Francisco Bay, San Mateo County (1/1/2010)
Hummm … a very intriguing, if not a completely successful wine. Openened three hours before tasting, with no decant. Surprising (to me) color of dark ruby. Mostly forest floor on the nose with just a hint of brett. On the palate, some red fruit with just a bit of astringency. Almost zinfandel-like. Well balanced with a good mouthfeel. I marked this down not for the slight brett, but more because of a lack of pinot character and somewhat muted fruit and short finish. Probably didn’t reach the heights that Kevin and team had hoped, but it was an enjoyable wine overall. I have one bottle of this left and will probably wait at least 6 months or so to taste. 2006 Big Basin Vineyards Syrah Fairview Ranch - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands #12/31/2009#
Medium dark ruby red. Expressive red and black fruit aromas. Rasberries, blackberries and cloves on the palate. Nice tannic structure and noticable acid. Well balanced with a lingering aftertaste.
Like Justin Smith with Booker Vineyard grapes, Bradley Brown proves that he can make great wine purchased grapes #in this case# - as well as well as his outstanding Santa Cruz Mt. estate grapes. #90 pts.)
