As Earl Weaver allegedly used to say; “if you think you’re going to hit into a double play, strike out”.
Brave man to pop an 04 Pinot Gris lol
Great and entertaining notes as always Dave.
I’ll double-down on “the very short finish being the best thing” as maybe iconic.
Fingers crossed its correct, I’ve had 06-08 all with pox.
It was amazing!
There’s another one in the cellar.
Brave, brave soul. I’ll take a knee.
Got the shovel out for a lunchtime grave digging.
2002 Peter McCoy Chardonnay (Sonoma County)
Tasted twice with consistent death.
2010 Domaine de Villalin ‘Cuvée Tradition’ (Quincy)
As dead as Jack Klugman
2005 Blenheim Vineyards Meritage (Virginia)
The glass is thankfully half empty. A full glass would have been nauseating. Battery acid acidity and limited flavor.
2001 Francois Raquillet Mercurey 1er Cru Les Naugues
Faded and oxidized. Not evil, but just generically disappointing.
Just curious - what was the temperature of your father’s cellar?
was wondering the same thing - or any other issues with the conditions? I’m sure there’s a selection bias but I’d be hopeful that more of these wines were drinkable!
55-60 depending on the season.
I am selectively pulling wines that I expect to be past their best. I have rarely been wrong.
The other bottle of the 2004 King Estate Pinot Gris (Oregon) was just as dead as the first one. Peas in a desiccated pod.
2007 Chateau St. Jean Robert Young Vineyard Pinot Blanc (Alexander Valley) was a perfect example of complete oxidation. Butterscotch gone bad.
1996 Vega Sindoa (Navarra) was nothing but an empty husk of acidity.
Pre-dinner cryptstivities…
2003 Anton Bauer Grüner Veltliner Reserve (Donauland)
Oxidation central. There was zero reason to taste it given the way it smelled. Sadly there is another bottle.
2000 Chateau Beau-Site (St. Estephe)
Beau-Site was the wine that caught my dad’s attention back in the 1960s. He bought it on a regular basis for decades. Sadly he somehow stopped drinking it, and numerous bottles from several vintages slipped past their best days. There was nothing offensive , but the wine was vapid, devoid of character. It lamented not having been drunk up 15 years ago.
1998 Chateau Bertineau St. Vincent (Lalande de Pomerol)
Even less character than the Beau-Site. Alcohol with red food coloring. Unfortunately there are four more bottles in the cellar.
2000 Chateau Tour Prignac (Medoc)
Continues the unfortunate theme of “wines that if bought, are best consumed on purchase.” This at least retained a trace of identifiable Bordeaux character. It was a minor character, played by a mediocre actor, but at least there was character.
A Jack Klugman reference! Love it!
Domaine de la Rouletiere Vouvray Brut
Flat as a pancake and oxidized to boot. The most redeeming feature of this wine was its lovely plaque.
David - would love some notes on the gems you are drinking from the cellar.
I have posted most of them separately. The Chassagne-Montrachet note is posted. There’s a couple of tasting threads from late March and mid-April, etc. The Insignia note will be up in a bit.
@Jud_Reis here is one of the tasting threads:
Probably Frei Ranch. The early 90’s bottling were great. 94 in particular was very good.
