Because I am a glutton for punishment I brought home a bottle of 2001 Torbreck Woodcutter’s Red. Anyone need some lighter fluid?
It’s actually still sweet on the palate, but after that it gets even more disgusting. There’s a crater where the mid-palate should be, and the finish is as hot as a million suns.
I love how this thread just keeps giving. Come for the occasional diamond in the rough bringing some light; stay for the anti-tasting notes just burying the dead.
I was making some “Thai curry” fried rice, so decided to open another ZH from my dad’s cellar. The 1997 Zind Humbrecht Pinot Gris Clos Windsbuhl had better balance and less overt sweetness than the other ZH wines I opened last week, but was still past its best. Overall it just felt tired. The aromas and flavors were correct, but two dimensional. It was the fake Rock Ridge in Blazing Saddles - looked right, but nothing behind it.
“Somebody needs to go back and get a shitload of dimes!”
I watched the first two and had to rewind a few times because I was laughing so much I missed the next lines. I decided in waiting until I can binge watch the rest at once. Very entertaining, classic Mel Brooks.
A bottle of 2001 Leitz Rudesheimer Magdalenenkreuz Riesling Kabinett was not dead, but it was tired. It had gone down the road of losing flavor rather than becoming oxidized. Of course it cost $13 in 2002, so not a huge loss.
How about a theme party with friends called The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, where you watch the movie and slosh them around to see which ones end up in which pile by the end of the evening? Heck, that sounds awesome!
Hah! My dad’s favorite movie. I made him a ring tone of the iconic theme music.
Not enough geeky friends in Virginia to pull it off, but I should drop a couple of questionable items into another tasting I am doing at home in Connecticut later this week.
Fwiw I had a small flight of 2000 ZH rieslings and Gewurz and drank them in 2019. They ran a range from “still quite nice but drink up” to “wish I had this 5 years ago”. None were really dead ; a few were very much past their prime.
I think the whole ZH style of wine is quite polarizing; their fans will adore and others are vaguely shocked. I’ll drink, and enjoy them, but wouldn’t pony up the money or space for them any more.
2001 Beringer Vineyards Merlot Bancroft Ranch - USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain (4/19/2023)
Oh my gosh! It’s 22 years old and still a blueberry milkshake. Horrifying and mystifying at the same time!
