Tales from the Crypt - Culling my dad’s cellar

Yes, I didn’t phrase that well in the initial post. I meant I hadn’t had the '91 Cab in many years. I know the winery is still around, in fact the distributor I worked for sold it for a few years. The wines are always very good and well-balanced.

My dad actually drank up all his Truchard.

Figures.

Back in the crypt, though with more of a “meh” wine than a dead wine. I used to buy Soutiran a lot years ago. Actually first tried it on a business trip to Southwest France. I doubt the wine is less good. I think my tastes in Champagne have been greatly elevated over the years. That said it was nice enough with non-geek friends. Everyone enjoyed it, but it wasn’t worth thinking about.

Tonight’s actual crypt selection is the 2001 Pahlmeyer Merlot. I have been through a few bottles of this with differing results. Tonight’s is a delight! There’s still good fruit, a little structure is poking through, and it’s not showing heat at all. The only problem is that it will likely put me to sleep before the Sunday Night Football game starts. It’s a little heady.

Definitely. One is Chateauneuf-du-Pape, the other Chateauneuf-du-Poop.

Hopefully it rendered you unconscious before the 4th qtr

There’s plenty of un-crypt wines to explore, like this one.

Sigh. Yes, even the basic Napa bottling was terrific in the 80s.

$59.99 seems very expensive for that wine. I stopped buying Caymus in the early 90s when it broke the $29.99 threshold. it was under $20 in the late 80s.

It went up very quickly after the hype around the 1994.

In line with the alcohol.

Not that they were alone in that.

That should be really good right now, but better in 5 - 10 years.

It is good now. Not sure how much it will improve, but it sure should hang on for a long time.

My recent experience is sadly lacking, but going back I always found 15 - 20 years to be a real sweet spot for this wine.

Depends on the vintage, but I generally agree.

Bringing out something from the Crypt that isn’t so crypt-like tonight. Post-2000 I have tended to find Poyferre a little ripe/large-scaled for my taste, but the vintage keeps things in check. This is actually still youthful, but it a drinkable spot. I think there are a couple more in the crypt, which I will bring home soon.

A very loose cork doomed this wine to a swift and merciless demise.

This on the other hand was delicious. So glad there are three more in the crypt!
