The Barton is somewhat instructive, as my dad bought it from a highly reputable merchant who had acquired it from a private cellar. My dad’s storage was excellent (as is mine), so it was probably pre-cooked by a prior owner. There’s not much to prevent that.

This is largely why I don’t buy at auction.

Definitely a defective bottle. I tried this just a couple of weeks ago, and well-stored bottles are excellent.

I bought a case of this Barton on futures back when it first came out. It was so good that I bought a half dozen more some years later. The 1994s are still great bargains for their quality. Not the best year ever, but very nice traditional wines were made and carry their years well these days.

Indeed. I have had a number of good 1994s. There’s still one or two more in the crypt. Hopefully they will be better.

I sold my '94s twenty years ago to a friend who had a kid born that year. From all the reports since, that was a mistake on my part.
