This thread and my own underwhelming experience with Pataille has ended my interest I’ll leave the wine to others

Between the fizz, the prices, and the guy allegedly being an a-hole, I think I’m done as well.
I have a half dozen bottles, those will be plenty enough.

Well, I’m bumping this at my own risk.
I shared a wonderful bottle of 2023 Marsannay with my wife back on 7/15/26, and I kept thinking about this thread, lol.
I can’t speak to bottle variation, and I certainly won’t deny how little luck some of you have had with the 2022 Bourgogne and Marsannay. What I am willing to state is that I think the Bourgogne is treated much less carefully than every bottling above it, and that even the Marsannay has had varying degrees of purchased fruit from some of his family’s old sources. Regardless, this 2023 very much lived up to JM’s tasting note, and both my wife and I were very, very satisfied with it. I purchased x2 for $42/per; and at this quality I would pay it over and over again. It’s a certain style, sure, but it was bright, vibrant, with plenty of great acidity tucked under the fruit and fine tannin layer.
Without further ado:
7/15/26 - Sylvain Pataille Marsannay 2023
Obviously whole cluster, full nose, nice purple fruit aromas like blackberry bramble. Somehow all meshed into a fairly clean, med +++ acidity. Plenty of complex aromas tied into a tannin structure that isn’t developed yet. This will clearly shift and transform a ton in the glass and with bottle age, but it also probably has a nice, broad drinking window. I have a very hard time imagining this shutting down all that much, and I’m quite pleased with this!

Did it have the funk or was it clean?
@wbkeene Oh it was clean. There was very brief whiff of reduction funk on opening, but nothing unusual, it cleared rapidly, and the wine blossomed quickly after that.

OK…I opened #4 of a six-pack of the '22 Bourgogne on July 19th…it was still mildly fizzy, nothing like the previous two times, but it was also acidic enough that I just splash decanted it, put it back in the bottle and came back 24 hours later. The fizz was gone, and it tasted ‘better’ than the night before, but it’s still got a big dose of acidity and too much VA for me. The last time I opened a '22 Village Marsannay was back in February, and it was…surprise…actually pretty good.

Another (single) point of reference. The cork almost soaking through on such a young wine (or frankly any wine) is a little worrisome. That could be some pressure, if there is excess CO2 in the bottle at bottling, or just lousy corks. Wouldn’t surprise me if Pataille subscribes (mistakenly) to the notion that CO2 is protective against oxidation, and doses his wines before bottling.
2023 Domaine Sylvain Pataille Marsannay - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Marsannay (7/26/2026)
Cork not soaked through, but a decent amount has crept 2/3 up the sides. Fairly dark garnet color, on the nose there's maybe a whisp of "natural", but more a sense of interesting clove-like aromas. Palate is tasty bright red fruit, dark raspberry/strawberry, bright acidity that leaves an impression on your tongue through the finish, a little orange peel. Not overly complex or profound, but refreshing, delicious, a nice table wine. (88 points)
