Well, the not so humble D’auvenay village bested the two Chevalier Montrachets tonight. Especially impressive considering the producers.

1996 Domaine d’Auvenay (Lalou Bize-Leroy) Auxey-Duresses Les Boutonniers - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Auxey-Duresses (8/30/2017)
Well hot damn if this didn’t run circles around the 01 Levlaive Chevalier Montrachet and 04 PYCM Chevalier Montrachet tonight. This was in impeccable balance between the acid and fruit. A much more precise wine than either Chevy tonight. My WOTN easily. -
2001 Domaine Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru (8/30/2017)
Wow. So much richer than the 04 PYCM Chevy. This had the Leflaive matchstick but was also a bit buttery and soft on the palate. A hint of oak. Thank goodness no hint of premox. A wonderful wine that makes you happy with how delicious it is but also sad because the Domaine can’t make 'em like this anymore. -
2004 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Chevalier-Montrachet - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru (8/30/2017)
Very clearly different from the 01 Leflaive Chevalier Montrachet. This has a greenish straw colored tint to it. Very pycm in signature with lots of acidity. Fruit is sweet and rich. No hint of premox and able to age for many years more. -
NV Drappier Champagne Brut Rosé - France, Champagne (8/30/2017)
Nice cherry and lemon. This actually paired well with a duck dish that had a touch ginger. Our only “red” of the night so it was useful with the meat dishes. -
NV Krug Champagne Brut Grande Cuvée Edition 164eme - France, Champagne (8/30/2017)
Starts off acidic and lean but picks up a by of richness and Krug oxidative notes. A delicious wine and I’m glad to have a case for aging.
