I was about to open a bottle of 2010 Aldo Conterno Barbera Tre Con Pile this evening when I realized that we had a surplus of leftovers, with some dating back to before a trip over the holidays. All gave considerably pleasure:
Burlotto 2012 Dolcetto, opened Dec. 13, and refrigerated in a 375ml bottle not entirely full. Yum! Smooth, fruity, and much better than when it was originally opened. It was a bit disjointed then. (Have you ever seen a baby deer or lamb get to its feet for the first time? That’s how it was.) And here I was ready to dump it in the vinegar barrel. Who would have guessed this would hold up so well. A steal at $15.50.
Romeo e Costello, 2009 Allegracore, Etna Rossa, opened Dec. 19, I think; refrigerated since then. It lost a little fruit, but was still very good with homemade meatballs (my first!) in tomato sauce.
Coudelet de Beaucastel, 2010 Cotes du Rhone. Opened three nights earlier with a half bottle or so of leftovers refrigerated. Inky color. Pretty extracted, fairly tannic, but good fruit. The rest of my bottles are in storage for a few years, and they belong there. But everything is in balance so I expect this develop beautifully.
