I was struck today by the fact that what was once my favorite Local Wine Store is out of business and being replaced by a self-serve yogurt place. I blogged, tweeted, and facebooked an idea that everyone should buy a bottle of something at their LWS this weekend. If you feel, as I do, that a local wine store adds value to your wine drinking, please pass it on through all means possible.

You may want to look at this idea: the 3/50 project is a loose coalition of local retailers which are working to encourage people to pick three local stores (in their neighborhood) where they will spend $50 each month. My LWS is one of them. My LBS (local bike store) is another.

You know, it was Montclair Wine & Spirits which has been closed for a while now (a year+?) but I kept hoping someone would do something interesting with the space. Admitedly they did have some rough patches over the years but I used to enjoy going there when Brian Gourley ran it. He is over on Piedmont Ave now, by the way.

If someone were to open an actual wine shop in my town of Coventry, CT, or its immediate neighbors, I promise to give him half my paycheck. Until then, I’m keeping FedEx afloat headbang

As Rich Trimpi & Bud Carey have already pointed out, living in PA makes it very difficult to support this initiative with a lot of enthusiasm [bleh.gif] .

I am sure if I was in Napa, though, that I would have no problem visiting Randy & Carrie’s place of biz, and if I was a touch further south, I could pop in for some celeb sightseeing at Roberto’s shop whilst picking out a Bonarda or two.

I like the idea of this thread a lot. With so much wine being sold on the internet now I’m worried that it’s becoming increasingly difficult for locally owned stores. I do buy wine online, but I think this is another area of commerce where local economies can easily get left behind as giants like Trader Joe’s and (even though I like them) Wine Library take over a large portion of the money people are spending on wine. I think it’s too easy to put convenience and slightly lower pricing before our neighbors whose money helps to support our local communities. As I am an offender in this way, I will try to let this remind me to spend more of my wine money locally. Thank you.
