They are fucking unreal. I liked your 2019s (esp Untrue Mader) but the 21s are a breed apart and a class above. The Carignane is delicious but the star so far is If Eventually…Why Not Now? — which is like the best Dão you’ve ever had. Don’t walk, run for Jason’s 21s.

2020 Stereophonic Syrah “Gilded Splinters”, Kimsey Vineyard, Ballard Canyon, Santa Barbara, CA
The first thing you notice about this Syrah is that its aroma come rocketing out of the glass like a snake-in-a-can. A truly unforgettable combination of savory and sweet scents, it combines sweet plum with sassafrass, green olive, teriyaki jerky and campsmoke. 2021 The Faster Blade Carignane, Denner Vineyard, Paso Robles, CA
A shockingly assertive bottle of wine, The Faster Blade sets a high-water mark for Carignane in California, which is not something I say without some anxiety. Having loved this grape for many years, I’ve often felt our US versions never quite grew beyond aspirations of solid, affordable Carignane. Meanwhile, France, Spain and even Sardinia have taken the grape to heights. The Faster Blade is a deeply concentrated, brick shithouse of a Carignane with rugged minerality, intense tannin and wild Provençal aromas and flavors ranging from the countryside to the savonerie. This may take a day to really get going, so save part of the bottle, but it’s easy to dream on this being a truly dizzying glass of wine when fully mature.
