St. Louis and Louisville

We are going on a couple of college visits this month. Looking for recess for either town for dinner one each. Not super fancy but nice is good if that makes sense.

Near WashU and casual but excellent - Louie
Still pretty close to WashU and excellent, more formal, more expensive (and host to many local wine dinners) - The Crossing

Also a good constellation of restaurants at Hanley and Wydown, still pretty close to campus - check out any of the below depending on what suits you (Wright’s, though, is a particularly tough reservation)

In the other direction not too far from WashU, traditional French brasserie food at Brasserie by Niche or Mediterranean at Esca (haven’t been to Esca but have eaten at the owner’s other places and it gets good reviews).

Near SLU and very casual but some of the best BBQ you’ll ever eat - Pappy’s
Near SLU and very upscale/trendy/modern/Beard awardy - Vicia

STL is a corkage-friendly town if you pack your own. And go Bears!

As a fellow St. Louis resident (nice to meet you Dave), I whole heartedly agree with his list.

Louie is one of the best restaurants in town and my personal favorite. The food is simple but executed perfectly. The wine list exclusively focuses on Italian wines so if that is not your jam I would bring a bottle. You will need a couple week’s notice to secure a reasonably timed reservation. It perfectly fits the nice but not too expensive theme, especially for the quality of food. Good luck!

Second on The Crossing. We stayed at the Ritz in Clayton last summer when we moved in our son for his freshman year. Loved The Crossing. We actually went back for family weekend with our younger boys.
We also liked the two 801 sister restaurants right next to the Ritz.
There were also some more casual places closer to WashU. I can see if I can find what they were if you want.
My son loves his first year there.
If you want any info, just let me know.

The Mayan Cafe in Louisville. Yucatecan and most excellent. Be sure to get the Tok-cel lima bean dish.

In Louisville, 610 Magnolia, Proof on Main, and the Brown Hotel for a Hot Brown.

Was just in St Louis about a week ago. Previous recommendations are excellent. Absolutely go to Pappy’s for the ribs, but get there early…always a line, even on slower days.

I also really enjoyed Songbird for breakfast/brunch and would highly recommend going (they take reservations on the weekend too).

Louie - if you can’t get a reservation text me.
A friend, Chris Kelling, is working with Katie’s Pizza now. He’s great and the pizza was always good.
Sandwiches from Union Loafers are great.
Vicia was another favorite of ours.

I wish we had a Louie here in SD…among other wishes.

hey,

We were there last week. But may be going there for college. didn’t we do Vicia for a dinner ?

Going to be in Louisville Friday. Looking for delicious but not too fancy. Will be with my daughters. Hopefully southern cuisine.
