I have one bottle each of SQN Inaugural Syrah and Grenache. The syrah has a capsule and the grenache does not. Did the grenache come without a capsule or has mine just gone missing?
From the photos I have, they look similar. Looks like a wax seal not a capsule to me:

Where did you obtain these? I shudder to say it, but it sounds like both might have been refilled at some point.
The wax on the Inaugurals was not very secure, they fall off very easily, especially in shipping boxes.
Agreed. The wax caps fall off very easily on the Inaugurals. Some barely cover over the lip of the mouth. Not to worry too much. Most of my bottles that are no longer in tissue have lost their caps.
I got these directly from the winery Eric. IIRC these came in stryo and the wooden box was shipped separated. The wax tops come off very easily and could have stuck in the top of the styro. I tested by removing the top off of one of my syrahs and it easily came off completely intact. These seem to really be made out of rubber, not wax. Very pliable.
One more question: Would a missing top diminish the value of the bottle significantly or at all?
Value is most definitely diminished in secondary market w/o the wax.
Since you are ITB can I ask you how much this would decrease the value? Could the cap be replaced?
Of course it shouldn’t impact the value because it doesn’t change the quality of the wine in the bottle, but from time to time when I’ve seen offers of the same SQN with/without the capsule, the one with the missing capsule was slightly less but not meaningfully (say 5%-10)…
I thought you said that one of them had an actual capsule. How does that happen if the winery only uses wax? That is what I was reacting to. I now see that you corrected yourself in a subsequent post so never mind.

Actual value realized (price paid by the end consumer) will probably be 5 to 10% less, however there is much less demand for bottles w/o wax, so a broker is likely to pay you less (take a larger margin) because there is a higher risk that the bottle will sit for a long period of time before selling. If you sold it via auction, you would be the one assuming risk, so you are just looking at a 5% drop in the final price - after seller’s premium of course.
The entire discussion is moot if you just plan to cellar and eventually drink it, but if it bothers you - one could get in contact with the winery about a possible re-waxing. I have no idea if they do that, but it never hurts to ask.
