Spottswoode Release

So the 09 Spottswoode is available at 135 for a case, 140 for half a case and 145 less than 6. I love the wine and am definitely a buyer, but many times it is available at a lower price point online after the initial release, but sometimes as in the case of the 07 its not.

Any thoughts on whether the 09 should be purchased now or later?

If you buy a decent amount of this every year, this is where it makes sense to pay maybe $10 a bottle more from the winery for most vintages to insure against the occasional vintage where the retail price is $100 a bottle more (2007). Next time there is a 99-point rating on this wine people aren’t going to be as slow to react (like they were with 2007).

I went ahead and bought 6 and a magnum.

I’m a Spottswoode fan but this is getting difficult. Setting aside the 07 all other recent vintages are readily available well below winery cost. This is what makes expensive Napa Cabernet so difficult to buy.

Now that we may be entering an era of deflated Galloni scores perhaps this will change. Insignia is the worst offender in this regard, for example, 2008 (as usual, a great vintage for Insignia) you have a laughable release price of $225 but you can get them everywhere for $130.

I’ve been buying the 01,04 and 05 at Winebid at great prices. Been buying from the winery since the 07 and will do so again.

Had the 07 at a restaurant this week with about 1 hr decant. Outstanding and drinking better than last fall. Tannins are starting to soften. Won’t be opening my own stash any time soon though. 05 will probably be up next.
