I was last at Sparks a long long time ago - remembered the huge wine list and the 6lb whole lobster the table ordered. Fun night!
We were there last weekend and the food was solid. Had the 2001 Mission Haut Brion and the 1994 Rousseau Mazis (Really solid for a 94). Wine prices are really good here given NYC mark ups.
Unfortunately the online list was a bit out of date from a price and vintage perspective! We did have the Loring Clos Pepe, Roumier Clos Bussiere (couldn’t help myself), Mayacamas Mt Vedeer 07, Spottswoode 08, Pride Cabernet 10.
I thought the food and service was average, setting was nice. Wines were in general excellent, will write some more detail once in front of a computer.
Thanks for the help!
Agree with those that have said that the Sparks food is ‘average’. It’s only ok for a steakhouse, Sparks has been long ago passed by, by the other NY steakhouses. Just for the food alone, Wolfgangs, the strip house, and a few others are just much better. But Sparks is a classic, the huge room, etc. Sometimes it’s fun to go to the classics, even if they’re not quite as good anymore as the newer guys.
So go to Sparks for the giant room and underpriced (some of it) wine list. Walk on the sidewalk where in 1985 Paul Castellano was shot dead in an unsanctioned ‘hit’, by Gotti’s guys. Have an old school martini at the huge bar. Etc…
