My favorite kind of tasting. Never been but will make a point of it next time.
For a three stop day, i like Iron horse, Hobo, and Calluna. This offers a variety of wines. Iron Horse has the bubbes and nice views but is a bit more commercial now than my favorite memories from earlier times. Hobo is great wines at good prices but it is really about Kenny and his vision for wines that are intended for the table without breaking the budget. I love the industrial location for everything it isn’t. Then finish with Calluna. Great wines, amazing views, and David is a wonderful host.
I took a group on this a few years back and planned one more visit after Calluna. The group requested we quit after Calluna as they felt it couldnt get any better and they wantes to finish on that note.
Agree with others that Bedrock and Yeah! make a great one-two punch. Haven’t tried Darling yet but seems like one to catch from what I’ve heard. Those are just tasting room experiences but Sonoma square is cool.
I have to disagree a bit on Littorai. Expensive, yes, but I enjoyed our tour and thought it was chill. We brought our baby and didn’t get so much as an errant look. Even more expensive and far west but the tasting experience at Paul Hobbs is amazing (equal parts Sonoma PN/Ch and Napa cab for ours). Flowers has a very nice tasting room also.
Do you have suggestions for dining - lunch and dinner?
What about a nice dinner? Suggestions!
The Matheson was an enjoyable meal up in Healdsburg that didn’t break the bank. Single thread is the big 3 star restaurant in the area
A friend of ours recently recommended Enclos, which is in a good spot off the southeast corner of the square. We’ll be there in early February.
For dinner, I thought Valette (Healdsburg) was excellent. I haven’t been to SingleThread personally, but it’s on my list to visit on my next trip to Sonoma (pricey, three Michelin stars).
Girl and the Fig is great for lunch, especially if you’ll be around Bedorck in downtown Sonoma.
I also really enjoyed Journeyman Meat Co in Healdsburg for lunch. Still dream about their BLT sandwich.
We had dinner at Guiso Latin Fusion in Healdsburg and it was really tasty. We also had some appetizers at Starks in Santa Rosa during their happy hour. I would revisit both places.
If you’re by Petaluma, Table Culture Provisions or The Shuckery.
Out of several hundred visits to wineries and tasting rooms, my Littorai visit is in the bottom 3. It checked all boxes for what a bad wine tasting experience is, and they invented and checked a new box I could not have imagined.
What happened?
I have to know as well!
Late to this thread but agree Scherrer and Iron Horse. Close by with really low key tastings but great wines are Joseph Swan and Porter Creek.
Last visit to Sonoma involved trips to the following over 2 days:
Williams Selyem
Ridge (Lytton Springs)
Bedrock
Russian River Brewery (wanted to try Pliny the Elder)
All were absolutely fantastic. Those 3 wineries will make sure you have a great experience. Seek them out if you are close by.
In what part of Sonoma cty are you staying?
We haven’t decided yet. I was trying to nail down wineries first. Do you have a recommendation?
If you end up staying around the town of Sonoma, my wife and I enjoyed a stay at the Inn of Sonoma. Not a luxury resort but a nice place at a reasonable rate.
That kind of depends on where you want to. R lol. Just pointing out that, for example, the towns of Sonoma and Healdsburg are almost an hour drive apart. So you problem wouldn’t choose a Healdsburg resto if you then have to drive back to Sonoma afterwards.
We like both Sonoma and Healdsburg, with a slightly preference for Healdsburg. There are numerous good restaurant choices in both.
What are your favorite tastings in the Healdsburg area?
