Some Wines from Nicolas Joly and Hudelot-Noellat

Last night I went to tasting with John Passman. We tasted through several of the 2006’s from Hudelot. They are pure wines that really are very expressive even at this young age.

Before the tasting, I had a tasting of 3 wines from Nicolas Joly.

2006 Nicolas Joly La Roche aux Moines “Clos de la Bergerie” - floral and with good acidity. Nice finish

2005 Nicolas Joly Savennieres Les Clos Sacres - A deeper nose with more honey and wax. Complex nose with a slight hint of an oxidation note. The palate is very nice and refreshing. Thicker in the mouth than the Clos de la Bergerie.

2004 Nicolas Joly Savennieres Coulee de Serrant- A crazy nose. Honey. Spice. Minerals. Some slight oxidized notes. The palate is infinately complex. A mix of honey, minerals and some bee’s wax. Thick in the mouth.
An individual wine.

2006 Hudelot-Noellat Wines

Bourgogne

A nice nose. Bright cherry type fruit. The palate is simple and shows brisk finishing acids. There is pretty good length. With some time, this should flesh out to be a nice entry level wine.

Vosne-Romanee

A 99 point nose. Everything here. Spice. Some element of dark and lighter red fruits. Fabulous complexity despite having no earthy elements.
The palate falls down here. Hollow in the middle of the mouth. The length is ok. If the palate improves, this will be a wonderful village wine.

Vougeot 1er Cru Petit Vougeot

Dark nose. Complexity is ok. The palate is darker than the Vosne-Romanee. There is some dilution again here on the palate that keeps this from being something special. If this fleshes out, it will be nice.

NSG Les Murgers

Ah. This is more like it. Dark fruit on the nose. Elegant. Some earthy notes. The palate is huge and coats your mouth. The fruit is darker. The finish is very long. This is fabulous!

Vosne-Romanee Les Suchots

A deeper red color. The nose is reticent but unfolds with swirling to show spice and deeper cherry fruits. There is so much sap here. The palate is AMAZING. Great finishing structure and length. This will be special. I am a buyer.

Clos Vougeot

A reticent nose and palate. The structure is seamless and there is plenty of stuffing here. This will be quite nice but it is difficult to get a feel today.

Romanee-St-Vivant

A Vosne-Romanee on steroids with infinite finesse. Spice. Complexity. Intense fruit on the red side of the spectrum. The palate is intense and has fabulous length.

Richebourg

Textbook stuff. A dark purple color. Clarity and elegance. Power and restraint. Darker purple type fruit. Profound. Not a buyer due to price.

A post tasting 2005 Delas Hermitage Bessards is just stunning stuff. Seamless. Hard to really do a nice note here after that big tasting. The tannins are so soft compared with many other 05’s. Not cheap but excellent stuff.

Some great wines.

Thanks John for the tastes and to Mike McNeil for the information.

Don

Hey Don! Welcome aboard!

Thanks for the notes, the 2006 red Burgs are surprisingly good, even the producers I’ve spoken with are shocked at how pure and delineated the fruit is. I may have to seek out some HN…
Cheers! [gen_fro.gif]

Yeah…but where were the cab based wines?

Maybe I just need to listen to Greg P. some more.

That’s being polite, Don.

You know my feelings on Joly’s style, I believe. Just picked up a '67 Coulee which I’ll be saving for my birthday. Hoping for good things given the vintage and the fact that it was before Joly’s time.

Cheers,

Brad
