Some Sunday fodder: Your highest rated or most memorable bottle of domestic Pinot Noir EVER

Two candidates:

  • Ata Rangi Pinot Noir 2000
  • Bell Hill Pinot Noir 2008

Steve, good call on the '86 Calera Jensen. I had that from a magnum once, what a wine!

I was watching the Super Bowl with Jeff P. and Michelle, who both know you. Bob Kraft was interviewed after the game, and while he was on the air, I said to them, “Okay, who does he look like that you both know?” Michelle instantly said, “Steve Eisenhauer!” A dead ringer!

2011 Arterberry Maresh Maresh Vineyard

Also a 1997 Arcadian Pisoni, with Christmas dinner two years ago. I’ve been trying to find more since.

Great thread Mike. Since you asked about style and preference my pinot tastes have evolved since I really got the bug with the 04 vintage. For many years I liked Pinot’s that were more on the full bodied side but still showed great depth and balanced. My top ones were

2004 Chasseur Sylvia’s
2007 Kanzler SC
2005 Siduri Keefer
Sojourn Gaps Crown- several vintages

I’ve moved away from these mostly outside of Sojourn which we love and usually drink pretty quickly. Now mostly what I drink are wines that still pack a punch in flavor, have great aromatics and depth but would be considered on the lighter side in terms of body. I generally lean towards red fruit but I like em all. Top wines for what I drink now

1995 WS RRRV- Fooled us all blind. We thought Burg. Fantastic
2012 Soliste L’Ambroisie- my top all time pinot experience last year in Napa. The wine evolved over several hours into something I’ve never had from the US
2011 Littorai Haven- fantastic wine that is still very young
2012 Soliste Esperance and 11 Foret -about as close to Chambolle as I’ve ever come
2009 Zepaltas Suacci- The best Suacci by Ryan as he started to evolve his style

I’ve had some great 08 Oregon Pinot’s but they are a few years from showing their best and I won’t be surprised if several of them threaten for the title. Same with a bunch of Littorai Svd’s that need a lot more time.

Cheers

Fred, I think I align with your preferences. I am really finding joy in Littorai myself. Younger than most here are mentioning. Maybe 2009-2011 right now for drinking.

1979 Martin ray by a landslide. It was very similar to a 66 clos de beze served right before it. Just an absolutely delicious and memorable bottle of Pinot.

1971 Hanzell
1994 Delingher Reserve
1995 Littorai Hirsch
1999 Rochioli West Block

My experience is very lmited with higher end Pinot (or any wine for that matter), so for me it is 2011 Cirq Treehouse. Really looking forward to the 2012’s and 13’s-think they are going to be great.

And some David Bruce pinot I had in the early 2000’s-juts because it was the first bottle of pinot I ever had, and realized that Pinot is my kind of wine.

My highest rated PN (from France pileon ) is 2008 Domaine Taupenot-Merme Mazoyères-Chambertin. (Last tasted June 2013). I have few domestics that I enjoyed alot. Rhys gets pretty consistent high rank on my notes.

Another vote for this wine. Truly outstanding

Mike- I have a few left from 09 and a bunch from 11. I see a blind pinot throw down if you ever make the trek to Tampa and Berns…

Also, check out Oregon Wine Merchants if you need to find a few PG’s and others with some age on them. Just a bought a mixed case of some older ones and added some more 12’s.

Sanguis 12 Loner B

I guess it is domestic if you’re French??

Ah, so they’ve finally started single vineyard bottlings from the better components which formerly went into the Hearty Burgundy! neener

Upon reading the thread title, the 2008 popped into my mind. It was more memorable because of the surprise - 'twas my first from the winemaker or the vineyard - and also, I prefer its angularity to the riper 2009.

1997 Thomas
1999 SQN Ox

Two totally different wines, each good in its own way.

I dont know what my absolute favorites have been but here are the most memorable ones:
2005 kb kanzler
2005 seasmoke southing
2006 martinelli zio tony
2006 marcassin blue slide
2004 Walter Hansel the north slope
Sqn over and out (this is a huge wine)
Most recent holy shit pinot was the 2011 rivers marie silver eagle. And I mean HOLY SHIT

I feel like it’s too soon for me to answer this. The landscape has expanded so much, and I have not yet had the opportunity to have the wines with some age.

I epxect that Littorai, Kutch or Rhys will eventually be the “winner”, but judgement deferred for now.

I will say that I have had several SQN and Marcassin Pinots, and not all that much for any of them. Had a Marcassin over Christmas that was very good, but in no way revelatory.

My top three pinots in order are:

2010 Sojourn Rogers Creek
2009 Littorai - Pivot Vineyard
2001 Beaux Freres - BF Vineyard
