Some Saturday Night Notes

Fun night with friends old and new…app of rack of lamb and mushroom on toast…grilled steaks…plus some great wines.

Started with a 2006 Staglin Cabernet…loads of vanilla and red fruit on the nose…spice and earth tones…velvety mouthfeel…pleasant finish…very enjoyable and would not hesitate to drink now…give it a 91.

Next was a 2009 Saxum Padereski…popped and poured…my first experience with this new offering from Saxum…expressive floral nose and dark fruit…a big wine…I would never have guessed that zin is the largest component…the petite sirah is nice…smooth finish…went well with rack of lamb and steak…give it a 93.

On to a 2005 Sloan…this had been decanted at 10am…dark and rich…really smooth…worth the freight?..my second experience with Sloan…might be better young…give it a 91.

Wrapped up with a 2001 Revana…popped and poured…glad I finally decided to open one…one more left…drinking very well…nicely aged cab…fruits came through after 30 minutes in the glass, but more chocolate and earthy…no tannins present…short, but pleasurable finish…give it a 92.

Adam,

Nice notes. Glad to see you got a chance to get back to the comfort of some new world wines. Doc Dave, Nolan and I, along with our wives, opened a few Barolos on Fri night. A 78 Paolo Cordero, a 64 G. Mascarello and a 96 Borgogno Riserva along with an 07 Beaucastel Blanc, 59 Huet Le Haut-Lieu and a 71 D’Olivera Terrentaz. We talked about what a sport you have been on the last 2 dinners to get into the old world stuff. Sounds like you had a good night, too.

Cheers!
Tim
