Some recent burgs....

  • 2001 Domaine Robert Arnoux Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Proces - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru (8/1/2009)
Light medium red color. Wonderful nose of strawberry and spices. Picks up a note of dark plum and sous-bois on the palate. Feminine and elegant wine, with a good backbone. Good length and persistance on the back palate. Great with my grilled pork chop. Excellent.
  • 2003 Hubert Lignier Bourgogne - France, Burgundy, Bourgogne (7/31/2009)
I bought this bottle to check what a good grower could do with a simple wine in a hot vintage. Consumed over 4 days. The first 2 days, this reminded me more of a Cotes du Rhone than a Burgundy. Ripe cherry fruit with a somewhat baked quality. Spicy. Quite tannic as well, surprsing for a 6 year old Bourgogne. Lacks freshness and acidity. On day four, much better than the first 2 days and showing more pinot characteristics without impressing too much. A bit of earthy flavors and a tad dry on the back palate.
  • 2007 Gérard Tremblay Chablis 1er Cru Côte de Léchet - France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru (7/31/2009)
Pale yellow color. Quite muted nose, this is a young wine. Gives away some flower aromas combined with lime and green fruit. There’s a good concentration of fruit here and the fruit feels a bit ripe. Good acidity, but lacks a bit of that piercing minerality I like in good Chablis. I think this needs a good 3-5 years to settle down. Left half of the 375ml bottle for tonight. UPDATE: shows better on day 2. There’s more citrus and freshness. Still I don’t find as mineral as I would like, but maybe that will show up later?
  • 2004 Domaine Jean-Marc Morey Saint-Aubin Les Charmois 1er Cru - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Saint-Aubin (7/28/2009#
This is a another good little gem from JM Morey. Yellow gold. Citrusy nose with flowery aromas and a hint of exotic fruit. Fat, oily texture. Substantial, full wine in the mold of a Puligny or Meursault. A bit of white peach, mandarine, honey and butterscotch on the palate. Firming up on day two suggesting good potential. It’s almost too fat for the cheeses I had with this. Good wine.
  • 2007 Jean Foillard Morgon Côte du Py - France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon #7/22/2009#
Brought for dinner at Square Meal NYC. Great purity of fruit as always in Foillard’s Morgon. I love this stuff. Strawberry, cherry mixed with prickly blue fruit, earthy aromas and good minerality. Seamless, velvety palate feel. Not as big and powerful as the 2005, but certainly delicious for current drinking. Will keep well too, I’m sure.
  • 1994 Hubert Lignier Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Les Chaffots - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru #7/18/2009)
Absolutely delicious wine. Gentle decanting 1 hour before dinner. I find there is the typical Lignier nose - red strawberry fruit with a gentle touch a wood. I take a pour from what’s left in the bottle and note that the color is a tad brownish and that the wine has a bit of ‘old wine’ characteristics - tobacco, earthy notes, mushrooms and dried fruit. One hour later, the wine has firmed up in the decanter and shows beautiful red fruit in a subtle, soft way. I find strawberry, cherry in a refined way - more like I would expect from a Chambolle Musginy. There’s still good secondary flavors - tobacco, leather and cedar notes. Amazingly, the wine continue to firm up over 3-4 hours and yes, the last glass was the best. By no means a blockbuster wine, but a testimony to what great growers can do in difficult vintages. I’m happy to have bought a few more bottles of this at a very low price.
