Some older Bordeaux, a Tuscan and young white Burg

Fun night with some local winemakers on Friday.

  • 1955 Château Pavie - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru (8/17/2013)
Has some shitty bret and other funky things going on but a remarkably fresh and engaging wine none the less. There are notes of cedar, black olive, leather, sous bois, tar and sweet cedar. It is rich and dense with good balance and still plenty of structure.
  • 1959 Château Balestard La Tonnelle - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru (8/17/2013)
Possesses some tertiary mushroom and compost notes along with lovely sweet fruit. It is round and creamy in the mouth with good flesh and tannins that have all but folded into the wine. It builds in the mouth and finishes with complex savoury flavours. A really nice and engaging drink.
  • 1990 Château Pontet-Canet - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac (8/17/2013)
A little bit woolly on the nose. Plenty of cedar and cassis. Full, dense, sweet and round with supportive chewy tannins. Starting to drink nicely.
  • 2001 Tenuta Guado al Tasso (Antinori) Bolgheri Belvedere - Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri (8/17/2013)
Dense, deep modern dry red with plenty of coffee notes on the nose. It is loaded with dense cassis fruits and has cedar and tobacco flavours. It is generous and ripe and has good structure and excellent length of flavour.
  • 2008 Benoit Ente Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Champs-Gain - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru (8/17/2013)
Tight, bound up by sulphur and acid. Floral, sappy and dense with good detail and great texture. There’s a huge squeeze of lemon juice to the finish and it is chalky.
  • 2010 Blain-Gagnard Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru (8/17/2013)
Plenty of sulphur and a win e that is quite reductive. Spicy oak notes are prevalent but commensurate with the level of dense, sappy orchard fruits. It is compact and a little shy at the moment but has good texture and excellent length. The last glass had a pleasant mandarin aroma and flavour.
