Some old burgs and some new...

A group of mostly Yountville locals and a few outliers got together at Bardessono in the private room last night. I’d not been to this hotel and restaurant; it is brand new, but have heard grumblings about the food and whatnot. I found the food to be stunning – in particular the opening course of poached lobster and caviar cream sauce, which was decadent and intense. The Iberico ham app was killer too. We had a great private room and impeccable service. I am no Burgundy expert by any stretch but I love to drink it. Burgundy is an enticing creature.

But, the wines….notes are brief as I was having too much fun.

Random mid-70’s NV Champagne from half bottles, sorry didn’t write producer. This was serviceable and tasty with the gazpacho…

1993 Cristal – delicious, at peak (for me, anyway)
1990 Dom P – wonderful, toasty, vanilla, fresh and vibrant, many years to go

1975 Clerget Batard - dusty, funky, blew off a bit only to later reveal a touch of TCA. Otherwise was holding on, bitter lemon and ginger.

1938 Voilland Batard late release – Sweaty at first, then opened to roastednuts, sweet corn, green peas, great acid, fresh, a sweetness of fruit on the finish, rich and very alive. The best by far of the whites. A treat!!

1938 Louis Max Puligny – odd beery aroma.Very dark golden. Thin and clipped.

1947 E. Chauveau Corton – holy moly. Tropical, even candied banana nose at the start. Then a bit of paint, then the fruit…black cherry, cinnamon, nutmeg, dark beautiful color, later picked up ginseng, waxy crayons, candle wax, apple skin. Great freshness and healthy acid, wonderful color. Superb!!! WOTN tie with 81 Tache, probably. [winner.gif]

1971 Moillard Clos Vougeot – feminine, tiny touch of vegetal, cranberry, a wonderful and pronounced nose of dried sweet apricots, low acid, fat, long finish and perhaps a touch too ripe, even, but great.

1978 Jayer Nuits-Meurgers lare release – bit shrill at first, a dusty sourness, but structured and solid on the palate, good balance, some chewy tannin, cherry, beefy and vibrant.

1981 DRC La Tache – Very sexy nose, someone said, “hm I need to call my wife”. Very heady. Sweet and pure, with perfectly seamless earthiness wound together. Cinnamon, pure plum, cherry pie, I wrote Fu—ing great palate, super intense, long and round and plush, with plenty of cola. I looked this up and RP says 76 points. No way! But that’s subjectivity for you I guess. This was hardly wet, damp and vegetal. Great stuff. From a pristine bottle.

1988 Drouhin C-M Amoureuses – major surprise, marshmallow, killer big nose, young and feisty, watermelon Jolly Ranchers, seared teriyaki meat, light on its feet on the palate, touch candied, a bit short finish but a real tasty wine

1990 Jadot Corton Pouget - root beer, sarsparilla, black cherry, short finish

1990 Leroy Clos Vougeot – soy, dust, dried mushroom, some tannin, crisp acid, very young, this seemed a bit fractured to me for some reason.

1990 Vogue Musigny – ripest nose so far, almost porty, boiled plums, sasparilla, lots of black licorice, but very high acidity, – mouthcoating but to acidic. Lavender, grippy tannin, I called it the BULLY of the group.

1990 Coste-Caumartin Pommard les Fremiers – Dark, powerful, bit chemical, chewy

1995 Mazilly Pommard Pouteurs – Light crisp tannic (I was losing it by now)

2003 Dugat Charmes Cham – Big oak, powerful….

Thanks to everyone who came and all the great bottles!

I saw this on Hirby’s Facebook this morning. What a great tasting.

Thanks for the notes.
