Big shout out to Otto who generously supplied WOTN for my colleagues. They all like wine but arent geeky about it and thus, dont have much experience tasting things outside the typical fare (Rosemount Shiraz, Mark West Pinot, Hess Cabernet, etc.) I thought I’d open up some interesting wines, and not shockingly, they liked the 2003 Pipeau best.
NV Ganevat Oh
Crush had this for like $18 and tastes like a $50 bubbly. I believe its all chardonnay and shows the class and pedigree of something like a Gimonnet BdB or an NV Dhondt.
2006 D’Angerville Volnay Champans
Much tighter than a bottle I opened a few months back, but definitely still enjoyable. Still, I’d hold off popping any for a while. Soaring aromatics of cinnamon/spices, florals and tart red fruits should make for a killer wine once this matures.
1975 Chateau Gloria
My colleagues remarked they had never had an older or mature wine, so I brought this birthyear wine. Travel shock believers, shame on you. This came off the delivery truck on Monday and was a great example of a mature Bdx. Really fattened up with aeration and held up in the decanter for the entire night, with no edges.
2003 Chateau Pipeau magnum
Again, Otto is the man. You made 3 non-wine geeks very happy. Generously sent this to me when I remarked in a TN he posted that I thought it’s an enjoyable wine for the price point. I figured I’d open it and wasnt surprised when it was everyone’s (except me who preferred the burg, shocker) favorite. In fact, the 3 of them downed all but a glass of the magnum. Per my other experiences, this had a very solid, earth-laced bouquet with more menthol than I had anticipated. Nothing roasted here, just a great quaffer alongside some excellent food.
