I just returned home from a work stint and had some friends to dinner …. an excuse to get into the cellar. Diane, as ususal prepared a wonderful meal. The carmelized onion toasted bread soup topped with with chive creme fraiche served with the Chablis was really yummmy! The temps have cooled down in Tucson, so we were able to enjoy the evening outside. It was a lovely evening. I thought I would have a flight of 97’s, a much maligned vintage… I’ve always thought that Jadot did very well in '97. Nothing changed my mind after this tasting.
All the burgs (white and red) were decanted 3 hours except the 85’s which were decanted off the sediment and served immediately.
1999 Gosset Champagne Brut Grand Millésime - Nice structure, full bodied with nice brioche, mineral notes. Much differnt style than the Tattinger CdC.
2004 Taittinger Champagne Brut Blanc de Blancs Comtes de Champagne - Creamy, elegant. Mineral, citrus and very good acidity. Not a lot of toast.
2000 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Butteaux - Complex honey, bees wax, citrus and mineral notes. Very good acidity and very long. This wine always shows beyond it’s pedigree imo.
2004 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses - Unfortunately pox’d. Actually the palate not bad, but clearly very advanced on the nose.
2004 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Bougros Cote de Bouguerots - The decant really helped this wine. Very closed when opened, then really blossomed with air. Citrus, minerals…beautiful texture and mid palate with nice length. Excellent acidity. In the pocket for drinking now.
2003 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre - Ripe, full bodied. Tropical…Not very Chablis like. Lacks acidity, but still an enjoyable wine.
1997 Louis Jadot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques - Dark color and dark fruited. More primary than the CdB. Big structure. Some licorice, concentrated, ripe but not over ripe. Need more time, but should develop nicely.
1997 Louis Jadot Chambertin-Clos de Bèze - Always a wine I have loved. Jadot did well in ’97. Much more elegant style than the CSJ served alongside. Complex. Earthy, red fruited, elegant style. Some secondary notes and funk that I love. Soft tannins. Not at all over ripe. Not quite as good as 3 years ago. Drink now … at it’s peak.
1997 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes - Touch of VA on the nose that did not detract. Earth, minerals, red fruited. Complex, elegant. Nice length. I’d drink up, as I don’t thing it will be getting any better.
1985 Prince Florent de Merode Pommard Clos de la Platière - Very well balanced. Mature wine and probably it has seen it’s best days, but still lovely with that sweetness one gets with burgs of this age. Long finish.
1985 Domaine de Montille Pommard 1er Cru Les Grands Épenots - Quite a contrast to the Prince Florent de Merode. More rustic. Dark, some tar and licorice on the nose. Big structure. Just starting to come into it’s prime drinking window imo. Would love to taste with a few more years on it. Thanks Jon for sharing this one.
