Some '21 "Lesser" Burgundies (Tremblay, A Gros, Cathiard)

Nice “overview” of some '21’s with a local Burghead. These were all terrific for drinking now. Clearly exceptional wine making and they all did well with their “lesser” cuvees. Interesting that all had a touch of savory greenness and I don’t think any use whole cluster? Could be wrong on that.

The '15 Fixin was a great foil, more rustic but was delicious as well.

Flamboyant almost explosive nose. Pure candied cherry notes with some savory forest undertones. Palate more reserved and mid weight, with fine red fruits and just a hint of herbal greenness (not too much). I don't recall this being whole cluster so much be a little greeness from the vintage. Lengthy finish for a Bourgogne, with a little granite thrown in. Mid weight, refreshing, lively food wine. Nose is worth price of admission. I like this better than my last bottle a year ago. • 2015 Domaine Pierre Gelin Fixin 1er Cru Clos Napoleon - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Fixin 1er Cru (11/8/2025)
Served blind. Initially was a darker fruit profile but brightened and showed more red fruits with air. Some maturity, with forest floot, moss, and savory notes. Tannins were rather prominent and coarse, with the finish showing a hint of austerity. Was leaning '16 Beaune/Volnay 1er initially (given the darker fruit and tannins), but once revealed '15 Fixin made sense. Shows some rusticity but nicely balanced fruit just starting to show some maturity. (92 points)
  • 2021 Cecile Tremblay Bourgogne Côte d'Or - France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Côte d'Or (11/8/2025)
Very impressive for the level. Polished and seamless, with a sappy lush caressing texture in the palate—quite full and plump for a 21 but very much in balance. Acids are fresh but pleasant without being soft. Lengthy nuanced finish, quite strong for a Bourgogne. I think this is pretty much the best Bourgogne is going to be.
With air this actually kept firming up and showing more structure. May actually benefit from a few years. (92 points)
  • 2021 Sylvain Cathiard Gevrey-Chambertin - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin (11/8/2025)
Served blind. Got to '21 Gevry 1er and at the last minute switched to Chambolle 1er. Oh well. Solid in the style of '21. Pure red fruits. Sinewy structure with fresh but accessible acidity and fine chalky tannins. On the leaner ethereal side of things but plenty of fruit and depth here. Is there upside here? Unclear, seems pretty solid now--but when there's balance you never know. (92 points)
