Smith-Wooton Wines?

Does anybody have any familiarity with this winery? I saw what apparently is the whole lineup of their stuff in a small wine shop/deli that I trust the selection of, and bought a 2006 Tanner Vineyard Syrah ($35) which I understand to be the current vintage according to CT (or they quit making it), as well as an 2009 Petit Verdot ($53).

Any thoughts on these wines? They seem to be tiny production and they also make the Croze which seems to only make Cabernet Sauvignon from various sources.

I have tasted their portfolio at an industry tasting. My thoughts FWIW. These are very well made wines. The Petit Verdot is a wild ride and a heck of a fun wine, $53 bones seems about right based on my experience.

2009 Petit Verdot 5/22/2013 - On the nose, blackberry, cola, spicy oak. On the palate, ripe blackberry, raspberry, spice, cola. Very sappy mid palate transition. Lots of tannic structure on the finish. Wild, savage, and great. Even better than last year’s great effort.

2010 Cabernet Franc Napa Valley 5/22/2013 - Not Cali, not French, but definitely has the best of both. Great Cab Franc nose of sour cherry, rich black raspberry, tobacco, and bell pepper. On the palate, wild and untamed with rich red fruits, bell pepper, tobacco, and hints of spice. Finishes long with good acidity and balance. Great stuff, highly recommended.

2006 Syrah Tanner Brothers Vineyard Calaveras County 5/23/2012 - Nose of black fruit, tapanade, pepper. On the palate, boyseberry, blueberry, black olive, pepper. Nice finish, little bit of heat.

2007 Cabernet Franc Gallagher’s Vineyard Napa Valley 5/23/2012 - Exceeded expectations. Nose of sour cherry, black cherry, bell pepper, red currant, tobacco, cedar, graphite, spice. On the palate, sour cherry, tart currant, blackberry, tobacco, bell pepper, graphite, cedar. Finishes long with great balance. Beautiful stuff.

Had a bottle of Croze Reserve Cabernet several years ago. It was sublime.

Thanks guys. Great info. I think their total production is tiny, so I’m glad to see some folks are familiar. The problem is, many tiny, boutique-y looking wineries are actually just smaller chunks of some larger corporate entity; looking at the website, this look to be legitimately a family operation.
