Great txs guys
I’m curious, Philip. Any particular reason you want to purchase bacon online? Surely there are a multitude of local options in NYC. Just for one example, Schaller & Weber, 1654 2nd Ave, (212) 879-3047. http://www.nytimes.com/2006/11/05/style/tmagazine/05tbacon.htm
If online buying is important to you, I suggest Nueske’s applewood smoked slab, either directly from Nueske’s in 1.5 lb cuts or - if you want a whole slab - from We R Gourmet Foods :

Best of all would be Benton’s, though I couldn’t find an online source for the unsliced product - even Benton’s website only offers sliced. I did find a Chowhound posting from 2009 that says you can buy Benton’s bacon, “a slab or they will slice it for you,” at Marlow & Daughters, 95 Broadway, Brooklyn, (718) 388-5700. But I would call Benton’s and ask; I know they sell slabs and half slabs at the store in Madisonville TN, (423) 442-5003. http://bentonscountryhams2.com/
thanks for the links
I didnt really know any stores in the city/brooklyn to check out.
I also only spend 4ish days in the city working long hours and the rest upstate. So online gives me some great choces and is really easy.
My favorite bacon is the applewood smoked bacon from Dreymiller and Krey out of Hampshire, Illinois http://www.dreymillerandkray.com/. I find Nuetchkes way too smokey for my palate and often too salty. D&K seems to be pretty selective on the bellies (tends to be the meatiest on average of the brands I see) and they take great care in the smokehouse to keep the temperature as low a legally permissible. If you prefer a smokier bacon, their hickory suits the bill.
I don’t see a slab option on their website, but I know the sell it out of their shop. Worth a call
Schaller & Weber is good and if you can’t find it in the store, I believe they ship.
I kinda stunned by the price differences among the various purveyors. If I’m doing the match correctly it is $6 - $21.
Mangalitsa is very expensive to start with.
This thread prompted me to get sixteen pounds of Benton’s. Now gotta wait 3+ weeks.
Slab or sliced? Shoulda called me - I have about 8 pounds (sliced) in my freezer currently.
Chris
Sliced. We need to hook up this weekend.
Philip,
I’m not sure how far ‘upstate’ you are but if you are in Putnam or further north FYI Hannaford’s supermarkets sells the sliced North Country Bacon from NH for about $4 for a 12oz package. No, it’s not slab bacon but it’s about half their online price per lb.
Here’s the link to their site, they offer slab bacon and have a couple of different smoke treatment options as well

Edit…
We also have a local source for Mangalista in Branchville, NJ.
Hannaford’s in upstate NY sells NC for less then NC?? Wow I wasted a lot of money when I lived in NY getting this stuff shipped to me every few months.
Thanks Brent we are in New Paltz I will have a look for it.
Brian,
A bunch of NY/NJ members do an annual ‘Baconpalooza’ in mid-summer when the tomatoes are ripe. I’ve followed the action and North Country was the winner a couple of years. I lived up in Putnam for a few years and noticed it there. Now that I think of it, they also sell a thick cut version at the meat counter! I hope you catch this Philip. I think I actually preferred the packages because they were more consistently fresh than the stuff left out in the open, that’s why they stuck out.
I only shopped in the Pawling & Carmel stores but I assume the chain would carry it everywhere.
I will try and find a Hannaford’s this weekend.
Right next to the bridge, baby. If they’re selling NC Bacon in Highland, I’ll eat my hat. Let me know!
Call Alan at Benton’s. He will sell you whole belly’ sides unsliced. Be forewarned; it’s smoky, smoky, smoky delicious good.
