Had the 2021 Bedrock Sky Zin tonight. What is there to say? It’s fantastic. This is what I would showcase for depth and capabilities of Zin to a European winemakers coming over.
Hey just a heads up but Sky just released the 16 and 17 Zins. They are being sold with the 15 (2 bottles of each) for $300. I’ve ordered mine and created the 17 in Cellartracker. You can thank me later. Love to support this winery.
Thanks for the heads up, Tom. SommSelect featured the 2015 Zin on their site just yesterday. $46/btl I believe. And these wines can age!!! TN- 1996 Sky Zinfandel, Mount Veeder
I had the 15 before I ordered the 3 vintage vertical yesterday.
Dark crimson in color. 14% ABV. Intriguing nose of red fruits, anise and mint. Medium body with medium acidity. Rustic, Claret style Zinfandel. Cherry, cranberry, spearmint and pepper on the palate. Exceptional length on the finish. Such a unique Zinfandel and just a triumph from the problematic ’15 vintage. This will drink well for years to come. My rating: 93 points.
Man, that 96 must have been so awesome! And i totally agree on them aging well. 84 late harvest is still alive/kicking! Granted it’s a late harvest…but still!
Obviously I am quite bias over here as Sky is one of my favorite places in the world and run by people I am close friends with but I tasted the 2012 “Dragon” old vine wine a few weeks ago and it was incredible. I think this should be the cult wine of the year and it is a bargain for the work that goes into farming this vineyard and the wines. I love all their wines and they are truly unique compared to anything else up on the mountain.
@Chris_Cottrell , do you think it’s best to hold off on drinking these for a bit? Assuming so being its Sky Zinfandel…but would love to hear your take!
Welp…nevermind @Chris_Cottrell , no need to worry about aging this one, ha!
2012 Sky Vineyards Zinfandel, Old Vine ‘St. George’. The first wine made solely from the four rows of 50-year old vines that have survived the unthinkable (fires, droughts, etc). Well, to say that this wine is ‘unique’ is a massive understatement. I was excited to try this wine but was also worried that it would be kinda young (I like some age on most of my wines). Welp…I needn’t have worried, ha! Because if I was drinking this blind, I would have clocked it as a 15-20 year old wine…which is a good thing! Its all aged raspberry and spice on the palate, but it is INCREDIBLY integrated and comes across as light/medium bodied. Literally not a tannin or a trace of oak to be found. But acidity? Absolutely. And loads of it! Those that are looking for a big, brusing, mountain Zinfandel should look elsewhere, because this DEFINITELY ain’t that. A super compelling and wildly interesting wine that I am loving…and can’t stop sipping. Just ordered a couple more bottles. Get em while you can folks…assuming you dig this style.
That is what makes Sky so special, Lore has a way of expressing the varietal in a unique way, but with lower ABV. For Francophiles like me, it’s the perfect Zinfandel. You should try his 2013, it is spectacular.
As I assume dragons are not subject to shock, and instead of create their own shock and awe, Merlin has whispered that one should be sacrificed this evening.
Missed your question about drinking window but glad you were into it! 100% agree it is showing well now but I think it has many more years of great drinking ahead of it!
