Sonoe is a gem and these wines so reflect her mild demeanor. Loaded up on release and she added one more of each wine on delivery asking for BD16 notes. More than happy to oblige.
- 2023 Six Cloves Wines Chardonnay Linda Vista Vineyard - USA, California, Napa Valley, Oak Knoll District (12/28/2024)
Opened and poured above cellar temp, approximately 63°F. The wine presents a pale hue reminiscent of drying straw, with a faint green tinge. The initial nose opens with bright lemon-lime citrus, citrus zest, and a mineral-driven backbone, evoking damp concrete. In the background, a subtle yet intriguing note of Valencia orange lingers. Upon swirling, the wine reveals an aromatic complexity, with captivating hints of Spring lilac blossoms emerging.
The palate greets with a creamy burst of green apple, accompanied by a medium-weight texture. On the finish, it shifts to a more tart profile, with a rush of lemon wrapped in a delicate layer of oak and a touch of bitter unripe apple peel or grapefruit pith. Compared to the 2022 vintage, this release is much leaner and more laser-focused, showcasing Sonoe’s precision. The crisp, tart finish calls for fresh oysters or Dungeness crab to complement its refreshing acidity. Another winner from Six Cloves.
- 2023 Six Cloves Wines Pinot Noir Buf-Wehr Ranch - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley (12/28/2024)
This wine pours a deep cranberry to magenta hue, drawing the eye with its vibrant color. The nose evokes the essence of Vosne-Romanée, offering a complex mix of dark cherries, dried flowers, cinnamon, and leather, with subtle hints of gaminess and backyard BBQ. As the wine opens up, a distinctive Russian River Valley "Dr. Pepper" note emerges, but rather than detracting, it enhances the Burgundian character, adding depth and intrigue.
On the palate, sweet cherry liqueur emerges, balanced by a slight chalky bitterness from the 40% stem inclusion, which keeps the fruit's sweetness in check. With a few hours of air, the wine's acidity becomes more pronounced, lifting the fruit profile and amplifying the complexity. The finish is long and vibrant, marked by powdery tannins that lend structure and length. While I was impressed with the 2022 version of this wine it has exceeded expectations this time around. 13% abv 100% delicious.
- 2023 Six Cloves Wines Zinfandel Castanon Vineyards - USA, California, North Coast, Mendocino County (1/5/2025)
Second vintage for the Mendocino County Zinfandel coming in at a lean 13.1 abv. This wine presents a striking neon magenta color. Initially, the nose offered faint hints of fruit and spice, but it was somewhat shut down. After re-corking and revisiting the wine 36 hours later, it revealed delicate aromas of rose petals and a faint whiff of cherry hard candy. While the aromatics are intriguing, identifying Zinfandel is a challenge. Instead, notes of raspberry, cherry, and a pronounced dose of star anise lend a savory, lean character that might lead one to think of Cabernet Franc.
On the palate, the wine fleshes out with fresh strawberry and cherry, showing a light-bodied and elegant profile atypical for Zinfandel. The inclusion of whole cluster fermentation adds structure, providing a balancing framework to the wine. Compared to the 2022 vintage, which showcased notes of volcanic soil, this expression is distinctly different with the mineral notes being more subdued. The tannins are ripe, firm, and grippy, while the acidity persists through the finish, highlighting the fresh fruit flavors.
For those longing for the classic style of winemaking, this youthful Zinfandel will satisfy. It pairs beautifully with food and promises a bright future, with its best drinking window likely spanning 5-15 years. In the short term a long decant is recommended.

You are the best Sonoma local Berserker! Cheers!
My only kvetch (if you can even call it that) is that I’ll want to wait like 5 years before trying these! But I’ll have to open one up in the next year or so regardless.
