I know this isnāt the book, but a subscription to Somm TV has taught me a lot. Tons of great content that you can stream from tv/computer/phone.

Vint just posted a podcast episode where they interviewed a Gen Z woman who started a brand to help introduce the younger generation to wine. She had a past life working for Red Bull in their marketing department. Interesting discussion.

THATāS NOTā¦ wait, Iām being a boomer. I definitely had a knee jerk reaction, but all my years in wine retail I do feel like that is true.

This was a really great thread to start the year off! As a result of this thread I resolved to do more events this year to help foster a sense of community and to encourage more new / younger participants. I started off with a quick post Rieslingfeier event at Robertaās that was absolutely perfect. We had approximately 50 people, it was super affordable and there was great, really great wine and I learned that 71 TBA and Robertaās Bee Sting Pizza is one of the greatest food and wine pairings in the world!
In this vain I have just announced my next Rieslingstudy at PdV Wine Bar on Sunday, April 6th from (2-6, doors open at 1). PdV is the wine bar of NYC Food and Wine couple Max McKinnon who was formerly Head Chef / Partner of acclaimed french restaurant Libertine. Chef Max also knows wine as he did a stint as a sommelier. His partner Carenn worked at Frenchette and Le Rock amongst other top restaurants.
Max and Carenn agreed to host a Rieslingstudy in the PdV Garden and for the first time ever serve Schnitzel sandwiches!
I will be bringing a bunch of old, rare and large format bottles from my cellar and you get four glasses of wine selected by Carenn for ~$100 all in. I think it is a great deal. It is a delicate balance to make these as affordable as possible whilst making sure the restaurant does ok financially.
To be clear - I donāt make any money on these, subsidize the costs and bring lots of wine!

We announced this yesterday afternoon and it is almost sold out so I did want to make sure everyone here saw it because I was so inspired by the outpouring of responses to this thread - I think we all need human interaction, community and riesling and schnitzel in this insane world!

We had a lot of fun at our noreetuh event; Iāll probably try to do these a couple times a year. The food and service are phenomenal and itās always a good time if a little cramped with 20 ppl.

Itās the very issue of mass market versus āfineā that should be put into question. Corporate ownership of many fine wine holdings speak to how the relationship between the two is complicated. From my personal experience with them, people in their twenties seem quite clued into this.
WBs celebrate smaller winemaking ventures, which is great. Occasionally, they make āfineā wine relatable and question hierarchies of fineness, for example, with this thread:
Iām a Gen-Xer with a preexisting wine interest. Others will no doubt know more about how to attract young people. But I think wineās innate sociability is its greatest draw. Keep sharing your bottles of 30+ year old wine!

Iām way late to the party here, but Iām in my mid 30s and have been lurking on WB for the better part of a year now and only made an account recently.
MChang is dead on that, mostly, I feel a bit intimidated by this place.
On one hand, I donāt know if I drink enough bottles that this place feels are worthy of discussion. On the other hand, when I do drink something like that, I feel like Iāll get judged for spending that type of money on ālabelsā (even if I feel I got a relative deal to try one of the worldās truly great wines, which are mostly out of reach for people my age), which Iāve seen happen when some young people post expensive bottles. Admittedly, I did start posting wine on Reddit recently, where what I drink is considered relatively high-end.
Iāve been into wine for several years and only started collecting with intent in the past couple of years ā have about 250-300 bottles and have recently expanded my makeshift cellar to hold up to 500. Iāve found this place incredibly helpful and entertaining (I spent no less than half a day reading the Rudy Kurniawan wine fraud thread)ā¦ but Iāve done it all āin the shadows.ā
Ultimately, Iād love to find more people with whom to drink great wine, but most people my age are either not really into wine, or if they are, theyāre mostly into building an Instagram page and/or drinking super culty natural producers rather than exploring the broader wine world (and donāt get me wrong, I do like some of those culty producers, but I also like the classics).
Alas, Iām in the non-Chicago Midwest, so itās a struggleā¦

I fully get this sentiment, but I believe you are wrong. I am also fairly young for this board (41) and fairly inexperienced (been into wine for like 6-7 years now). So far, my overwhelming experience of the regulars on this board is that they are incredibly encouraging and generous with their knowledge (and their wine!). I believe most people here want others to experience the joys that they have, and really the point of all of this discussing is to encourage others to try wines.
My advice is to engage respectfully when you have something to say, donāt be afraid to ask questions, and you never know who else is out there. There are people on this board from all over the world and so thereās a good chance there is a likeminded wine lover here, especially if youāre posting bottles that are ālabelsā

I think this board like most of life is what you make of it.
If you post a note on any type of wine with proper context I think you will get a genuinely good response.
And the amount of knowledge here is just insane.
Of course the arguments can be petty but it is easy to ignore those.

Wineberserkers can be intimidating at first. Pro tip: Donāt let it intimidate you. There are plenty of people here who enjoy what you enjoy, donāt let the ones who donāt dictate how you interact with the community. It really is a community here and as long as youāre not a jerk people will have your back.
Iāve been a member here going on 20yrs and there are plenty people I donāt interact with simply because weāre on a different plane socially, intellectually and when it comes to wine and thatās fine. Be yourself, donāt worry about what some stranger thinks.
Like Tom Cruise said in Risky Business. āSometimes you just gotta say What the Fuck and make your move.ā
