Should Petrol Be Considered A Flaw In Riesling?

Alright, all of them are from the US. I’m starting to wonder if it has something to do either with the terroir or clonal material, since a huge majority of the wines I’ve tasted have come either from Spain or the south of France.

How much a GB usually needs to develop those petrol notes, ie. what counts as an “aged” Grenache Blanc? I’ve had a number of aged Grenache Blancs, but I have no idea how long one should keep a GB for it to develop any petrol character.

I don’t know how much I’ve noticed petrol in recently released Tercero GB, but:

I see I noticed the slightest hint in a 4 year old:

I had one at Tercero Grenache Blanc at maybe 10 years of age, and it had evolved a great deal (darker color, truffles and petrol on the nose, fruit receded, more complexity), but it was still quite good. Granted, that is not a wine designed for decades of age, but it convinced me that the “screw caps just preserve wine in its youthful state and don’t let them mature and evolve” view was incorrect. I’m also pretty certain that same 10 year old grenache blanc would have been something to pour do…
