So another board member and I set up a trade that he initiated and I agreed to. I was trading out a bottle that was actually at the time more expensive than what he was giving me in return but I overlooked the difference in value. Since I needed a bottle of what he was offering, I opted to trade him rather than buy it on the secondary market. We agreed to ship to each other once the weather cleared.

Pan a few months ahead and I send him a PM for us to each ship. At this time, scores had come out for the bottle he was offering me and due to the high scores, his bottle skyrockets in price. He then decides to pull out of the deal leaving me to have to pay twice the price in order to now purchase the bottle elsewhere. I sent him multiple messages asking for an explanation and he has decided to ignore me for the last two months. I’ve never screwed someone like this before. To me, a deal has always been a deal as agreed. This kind of rubs me the wrong way. Should I be upset or am I taking this one harder than I should be? Bah humbug!

Rubbed the wrong way for sure. You can’t make someone do anything they don’t want to, but it sounds pretty low rent on the surface to do the switcheroo on you like that.

As frustrating as it sounds, look at it as a positive that you didn’t enter a business transaction with someone who won’t back up their word.

Seems to me I remember a couple of years ago on ebob that you had a deal to buy some bottles from someone and then backed out yourself with the excuse of having to buy a beach house. I guess what goes around comes around. Or am I mistaken?

Does seem like a jerk move to back out of this sort of agreement. But we might be talking about thousands of $$$ knowing the sorts of wines that are probably involved here. That’s kind of a tough choice between honoring your word and a major financial windfall.

I don’t quite remember backing out of any agreed upon deals. If something ever comes up with me, I always give the seller or the other party the option of either selling elsewhere or else I finalize the deal but I can’t recall that happening more than once in over six years on these boards and purchases of close to a thousand bottles. If that did happen, can you site some particulars as I can guarantee that I’ve NEVER entered into a deal with anyone that I haven’t made good on…EVER. If that’s not the case, you all know exactly where to find me.

I agreed to trade a bottle of my 07 Scarecrow for his 07 Schrader CCS which hadn’t yet been given the double 100pt score by both WA and WS. The CCS was going for about $350 at the time and the Scarecrow $400+. Then, once I sent the request to ship to each other, he responded that he was no longer as interested in Scarecrow as he once was. After numerous PMs and emails asking for clarification, two months later he has yet to respond. Crappy.

I’m not saying that it isn’t a shitty move, but I have somehow always remembered you backing out of a sale and actually outing yourself when the poster was getting hassled to do it himself. If i’m wrong I apologize.

Nope. Don’t remember that one. You seem to remember it though and since you decided to call me out for some reason, it would be appropriate for you to provide specifics. I’m quite certain that if I’ve wronged anyone on ANY of the boards that I would pay it back to him three fold. But thanks Joe for slinging mud. Extremely mature.

Not a cool move, as a deal is a deal. And I agree, if Joe is going to sling mud, he should have specifics. Just my opinion.

You are entitled to be upset - but you shouldn’t be. It is only a single bottle of wine. Pretty small potatoes in the big picture. Just don’t do business again with the same person.
