Should fine wine shops hide prices like jewelry stores? Dr. Vino discusses...

Price hiding is bad.

It has a shady nose with potential manipulative finish.

In a shop with no prices, I ask about less wine and purchase much less.

I’m not there to work for it.

Must be a slow news day for Dr. Vino.

I can’t even imagine a way to make wine shopping more unpleasant. I don’t know why jewelry stores hide prices, but I imagine it is a combination of 1) making it harder for thieves to figure out what they want to steal, and 2) shaming people into spending more than they were comfortable with, because they’re embarrassed to express an interest in something and then back out only after hearing the price. My guess is that it is mostly #2. I sincerely doubt it has anything to do with encouraging a conversation on “backstory.” Jewelry does not have a backstory. But wine shops that want to move bottles as infrequently as jewelry stores move diamond rings might want to give this a try.

Dumb idea, IMO. People will work hard to earn their money but will have very limited patience if you make them work hard to spend their money.
